Spotlight On: M A R I N E

Hey guys!

This is a rather random message, but it's one that I really want to get out there.
I really want to say thank you to everyone who ever mentioned house in the sand to other people.

I know there are a lot of musicians who tell their friends about this space of web and that's such a wonderful feeling for me. I'm glad that people enjoy what's happening on here and to know that some spread the word is just brilliant.

Thank you!

Today's band actually found the blog through a suggestion which is absolutely lovely.

M A R I N E are a four piece all female band from London, England.
They play a mix of indie pop and alternative.

The band formed in Summer 2012 when Ruby and Cara sat around a campfire, soon the two songwriters realised they wanted to create a more electronic, a fuller sound. So after a little while M A R I N E became a four piece.

M A R I N E are:
Ruby Jack (vocals, guitar)
Cara Sebastian (vocals, guitar)
Beth Dariti (bass)
Kaja Magsam (drums)

So far the four ladies have released "EP 1" in February this year, "EP 2" is right around the corner and the first single of the second EP is already here.

"Sirens" starts off with a slightly ambient feeling to it.
The strong and expressive vocals catch your attention, once the first chords enchanted you softly.

A big leading part of the song is the rhythm section; the drums seem to duet with the vocals whilst the bassline underlines the guitar in such clever manner.

Ladies and Gentlemen, make sure to listen to this talented group of musicians, you really don't want to miss this.

Hey guys!

It's probably no secret that it takes a lot more than talent to get yourself a name in the music industry.
Writing this blog for three years now has allowed me to learn more about it by going behind the scenes.
As far as I can tell, this industry is one of the hardest - there are millions, literally millions, of aspiring musicians all around the world. Yet there aren't too many who can are known all over the world.
It's a tough and very lively industry.

People like myself (and many, many, many others) try to help out those who have talent. But again, you need more than just talent to survive in the music scene. You need passion, persistence and you need to work your bum off.

I am friends with a lot of musicians and often get involved in their creative work process. There are so many incredibly talented musicians out there and it's a shame that not too many of them get the recognition they deserve.

Fortunately some good people on the internet share my opinion and try their best to help out as much as they can.

And so do the people from Superstartunes.com, a company who introduced themselves to me and absolutely caught my attention with what they do.

Superstartunes.com is a platform for musicians of all genres. They offer different services and cover a lot of topics that help out.
You'll be able to find out more by visiting their website here. To give you an even bigger insight of what they do, I spoke to Richard, the founder of the site.

Here's our little interview:

house in the sand: Your site supports unsigned musicians as well as labels which are looking for new music. How did you come up with this concept?

Richard from Superstartunes: I have always been a keen music fan and have had this passion to find the next big thing. Over the years I have seen a lot of talented artists who have struggled to get their music out there. I wanted to create a platform with an open invitation for anyone with the passion for music to join and be able to find everything they're looking for in one place.

HITS: What does it look like behind the scenes of Superstartunes.com? Who works on this site?
Richard: Superstartunes.com has a very dedicated backroom staff who live, breathe and love music. We are physically knocking on doors, constantly keeping our phones ringing, emailing and networking with industry experts to get their attention, so the artist can concentrate on their music.

HITS: How does Superstartunes.com benefit the music industry?
Richard: When artists are starting out there are so many avenues to choose in order to get themselves heard. With the power of the internet, networking with people all of over the world has become a fantastic opportunity to develop themselves and their music. However you don't see everyone putting their music on the social media sites i.e. Facebook and Twitter; at the same time you don't see industry experts scouring through the internet to find that diamond in the rough. There may be the odd breakthrough who gets the most hits on YouTube or goes viral through Twitter. But these are few and far between.
Superstartunes.com is a bridge between artists and the industry and a viewing gallery for like mind artists. It is an open audition for artists to put their music out there, and receive feedback upon their talent from industry experts and music fans.

HITS: A question which is probably important for all musicians reading this: Can everyone be a part of your site? Or are there any specials ways you select the music/the musicians?
Richard: This is an open platform for everyone to use from artists, DJs, producers, lyricsists to fans, music scouts, record labels, etc. But anyone can go on and listen to music. As feedback is essential to progressing your career, we have allowed the use of feedback from genuine people and only signed up users can leave feedback. Plus we have used simple systems from star or not start rating systems as well as direct written feedback to aid this.

HITS: You also help acts with the production of their songs. Can you please tell us a bit more about that?
Richard: The biggest thing we try to do is get the right people in touch with each other. As we look after a range from artists, producers and lyricists, we try to get them to connect with each other. The site acts as a social media outlet for people who want to connect with each other.
And if they can't find what they're looking for, we can help. For example - a producer can go through our site to find an artist, but if they can't find what they're looking for, they can contact our team to recommend them a pontential artist.

HITS: Since house in the sand loves discovering new music, why don't you share some of your favourite songs with us?
Richard: - Paul Mathews

HITS: If there is anything you'd like all HITS-readers to know, this is your time!
Richard: As a music lover I don't have the talent to be an artist, but I would hate to see a talented person go unrecognised. Also it is getting increasingly difficult to go to every open mic night and website to find talented musicians, I just wanted everything in one place.
We are not here just for specific people, but to help everyone in any shape or manner through the site or via our offline work, this is what we love doing. We all need a helping hand sometimes and we want to be that helping hand for unsigned artists.

Spotlight On: James Hersey

Hey guys!

As a music blogger I am told about a lot of new releases daily, and it's usually always wonderful to go through all those emails.
I'm in the lucky position of getting new, fantastic music delivered to my ears.

And whenever I find those artists that just absolutely convince me with their talent, I can't wait to share them with you.
Of course that's exactly what I do on house in the sand and today shall be no exception, so let's get into it!

James Hersey is a singer/songwriter from Vienna, Austria, his father is from America.
The first thing you'll notice, when you listen to his music, is the variety of genres he mixes together.
He blends singer/songwriter elements with electronic synth beats. Some songs could be classified as indie-pop, some as alternative.

His love for multiple genres started to develop in his childhood. At the age of nine years James learned to play the cello and drums. Four years later he got his first e-guitar.
He was part of his school's choir and played in punkbands afterwards. Through school mates he soon learned more about hip hop.

James released his first EP, the James Hersey EP, in 2010. It was written and recorded by himself. The song "Promises" got him his first radio plays.

With his first earned money James travelled to London, New York, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas - looking for inspiration.
The results of his inspiration travels are present on his EP "Twelve" (released in 2012) which he recorded after his return to Vienna.

And now were waiting for James' debut album "Clarity" which will be released on 27th February 2015.

Check out the official music video for "What I've Done" here:

Spotlight On: Midnight Hour

Hey guys!

There are a lot of things I really love about blogging. One of them has to be meeting other bloggers and actually becoming friends with them.
Today's post is strongly influenced by the wonderful Nessi Holt from carpe carmina.
Not only do we share the same name, but also some fantastic music.

Nessi told me about Midnight Hour, a fantastic band. And I'm happy to introduce them to you today.

Midnight Hour is a pop band with rock elements from Orange County (Los Angeles), USA.
The band formed in 2006, went through some line-up changes and now consists of:
Brad Logde (vocals)
Tim Johnson (lead guitar)
Mark Johnson (guitar)
Jeff Fernandez (bass)

So far they have released the EP "Ghost In The Mirror" in their early days, their debut album "Midnight Hour" which was recorded in their own studio and produced by themselves back in 2012.

"Running Away", a song off of Midnight Hour's debut album was featured in the series "Ghost Whisperer" and even the band made an appearance.
"Modern Love", also off of "Midnight Hour", the debut longplayer, was their first song to get played on the radio. Californian radio station KROQ welcomed the band's music and played it multiple times.

The pop band has supported well known colleagues such as Imagine Dragons and Plain White T's on tour.
In 2013 they released another EP, this time consisting of stripped down acoustic songs.
This year "Monster", a new single with a slightly mysterious twist to the band's signature sound, went online.

Radio hit "Modern Love" is also the online song which got its own music video.
Well deserved though.
The energetic and catchy song represents Midnight Hour's lively live performance which is shown in the video. Paired with backstage footage and lovely campfire scenes the video is an absolutely joy to watch.
The song itself is a powerful, vibrant vocals colour the song, the infectious and catchy instrumentations gives it the necessary grip. A fantastic song which you definitely want to hear!

Spotlight On: Sound Of The Sirens

Hey guys,

Folk rock, a genre that almost always gets me. I don't know what exactly it is about it that really fascinates me, but it just does.
If the folk rock sound includes beautiful harmonies it's safe to say that the band has already won me over.

Sound Of The Sirens absolutely represent everything I look for in a folk rock duo.
Abbe Martin and Hannah Wood are the two ladies behind the duo from Exeter, UK

I just recently found their album 'A Long Way To Fall' and their newest EP 'Under The Stars' in my letter box and got fairly excited.

After listening to the songs I already realized that there's not a single let down or disappointment included.

Spotlight On: Hudson Taylor

Hey guys,

Oh me oh my. Today I'm once again really excited because I already know a lot of you are going to enjoy the music I want to introduce today.

Hudson Taylor is a duo consisting of the brothers Alfie and Harry from Dublin, Ireland.
Two lads with a lot of passion and even more talent to make music.
They started out busking on the streets of Dublin and continued recording videos on their YouTube channel throughout the years which had over 4.5 million views by now.

Besides cover versions of famous tracks they also perform their originals and have released quite a few tunes.

Spotlight On: awesome rock music

 Hey guys,

The last article which featured multiple song tips got some wonderful feedback, that's why I decided to writer another one of those.

This time I want to put the spotlight on six brilliant rock bands which asked me to write about them.
I always try to be open for every genre and I don't think you can be happy by just listening to one single genre. At least I couldn't.
But I admit, rock music has been with me for years and I really got a thing for raw guitar riffs, marching drum beats and basslines and expressive vocals.

Personally, I absolutely enjoy each and every single song you'll find in the post, so I'm really asking you to take some time to listen.

Spotlight On: The Koniac Net

Hey guys,

The greatest thing about music in my opinion? The fact that it's international. It's a world wide thing.
Name a country where music doesn't exist.
The greatest thing about the internet?
We can share the music.

As I'm writing this article I'm sitting in my room in a super small town somewhere in the South of Germany.
My blog statistics tell me that my readers are from the UK, the US, China, Italy, Japan and a lot more countries.
And the band I'm introducing today is from India.

Spotlight On: Keeva

Hey guys,

Sometimes when I receive music submissions I get really angry.
Not because the music is bad or the people are rude, definitely not because of that.

But because there is so much talent that doesn't get enough recognition or 'fame'.

And yes, I got a little angry when I was done reading the email Keeva sent me. An absolutely lovely girl with a voice that just gets to you.

Spotlight On: Pawns or Kings

Hey guys,

I think I've mentioned it a few times - I love rock music.
But it's not the only genre I love. (Hey, I'm a music blogger - it'd be a shame if I only enjoyed one genre!)
The other genre (of many more) I really enjoy listening to is acoustic/folk. I love how it can be calming yet still very lively and not monotonous.

It's not a genre thing when lyrics are great, but thoughtful, philosophical lyrics really match the acoustic/folk sound.

And today I'd like to introduce you to a band called Pawns or Kings who absolutely represent that kind of music.

Spotlight On: Liam McClair

Hey guys,

Liam McClair, a 22 year old singer/songwriter from Manchester, England is one of those unsigned musicians you better keep an eye on.

The genre to put him in would either be folk or acoustic pop. But I think it's a nice mix of both elements.
With nothing but his guitar and voice he's able to hypnotize you by telling stories in some of the most melodical and dreamy ways you'll ever hear.

Spotlight On: Winter In Toronto

Hey guys,
discovering new and great music is one of my favourite things to do.
Sharing my discoveries with you is another one.

And that's why I'm doing a spotlight on today.

Winter In Toronto is an acoustic and folk duo from London, England.
The guys behind it are Cameron Pickard and Ellis Mizen.

Spotlight On: Permanent Ability

Hey guys,
today I'd love to introduce a very special band to you.

Permanent Ability, a funk-rock/alternative band from the sunny side of the globe, Los Angeles.

Spotlight On: Gilded Bones

Hey guys,
today I want to turn the special house in the sand spotlight on Gilded Bones.

Gilded Bones is a folk/rock solo project from Swansea (UK).
The man behind Gilded Bones is Gerwyn Davies.
Gerwyn is a singer/songwriter, guitarist, producer and engineer.

Spotlight On: JproD

Hey guys,
yes, I'm finally writing a "Spotlight On:" again. I really missed it.
A while ago JproD emailed me and send me some of his press material which I really liked, so let me introduce you to this great guy.

JproD is a lifestyle rapper from Bristol (New England).

In his songs he raps about own experiences, things that happened to him and things he saw happening.
Music is his way to express himself and tell people about his life so they can either relate or get a clue of what he is going through.

Spotlight On: The Plea

 Hey guys,
let me give you one advice that could change your life: trust Jim Kroft and his management when it comes to his support acts.
Seriously.

You probably remember last years concert review of the JK headline show where The Arkanes played first. You probably know that they became one of my favourite bands. (I salute you, Liverpoolians!)

The band I'm going to write about was Jim's support act from the "Lunatic Lullabies Headline Tour 2013" (concert review - here).

Spotlight On: The Bedroom Hour

image: The Bedroom Hour Facebook

Hey guys,
I'm finally writing a "Spotlight On:" post again and I couldn't be more excited. Today's band is from my favourite city and talented as hell.
So without further due, let me put the spotlight on:

The Bedroom Hour - a five piece alternative band from West London.

Spotlight On: Cat Meat

image: Cat Meat Facebook

Hey guys,

today we have a premiere on HITS: I'm going to introduce you to a band. Nothing new, right. But the band is a country band!

And the band is called: Cat Meat.

Spotlight On: museum.

Hey guys,

time to get the spotlight working again and put it on: museum.

museum is a electronic indie rock band from Berlin, Germany.

That's how the guys from museum would describe them, in a very simple and minimalist way. I am very very happy and honored to give you guys a proper description of who museum are.

Spotlight On: Litvinenko

image: Litvinenko.co.uk

Hey guys,

guess what? It's time for the wonderful "Spotlight On:" series again! You all know how much I love discovering new music.
This time it wasn't actually me who found the band, the band found me, so massive thanks for finding me, Litvinenko!
