Song Of The Day: "Jackboot Jump (live)" by Hozier

22nd November 2019 //

Hey everyone!

As bloggers it is expected of us to be quick when it comes to new releases.
We need to consume quickly in order to write quickly - and that's something you adapt to over the years and get quite good at.

We love the immediacy of writing and sharing, knowing that once we hit "publish", we can talk to music fans and get their reactions.
It's brilliant.

But sometimes we prefer having an extra day and night to sit with a piece of music, to really understand it.
We decided to do just that with Hozier's brand new single and it was definitely a good idea.

- Song Of The Day -
"Jackboot Jump (live)" by Hozier

After writing a tribute song for those artists who have used and still use their voices and don't shy away from writing protest songs. "Nina Cried Power" was Hozier's powerful return last year and perhaps it was the first nod to what was to come.

With his brand new single "Jackboot Jump", Hozier has gone and given an even bigger nod to traditional protest songs written by artists such as Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie. (Both artists are also named in "Nina Cried Power".)

The song is a live recording from his show in El Paso, Texas and only features the drums, played by Rory Doyle, the electric guitar and his vocals.
Although only using three elements for the song, it still sounds huge. The riff is as mindblowing as it is catchy, staying in your even when the song ends.
Power and depth are what the drums deliver so brilliantly and give the song the signature stomping sound we associate with Hozier.

While the majority of the song highlights injustice, political unrest and oppressive regimes (examples: Standing Rock, Moscow, Hong Kong), Hozier uses the last verse to show the hope he has in those who protest and use their voices to demand change:

"All around the world
You'd think that things were looking rough
But the jackboot only jumps down
On people standing up
So you know good things are happening
When the jackboot needs to jump"

It's just a bloody great track, so we advice you to check out the video below.

Song Of The Day: "Almost (Sweet Music)" by Hozier

Hey everyone!

I often think that a lot of you might roll their eyes when I start rambling about how music is pretty magical.
I mean, to be fair, I think it sounds cheesy, too.

But hear me out.
To me, magic is something that is powerful in subtle ways,
something that can affect you without trying too hard.

And let's be real - music does exactly that.

So, to me, music is magic and I was reminded of that today, when I listened to Hozier's new single.
It didn't take more than the first chord to get me super excited to get to know the track and as soon as the percussions kicked in, magic unfolded.

And so, we need to talk about the track.

- Song Of The Day -
"Almost (Sweet Music)" by Hozier

Besides releasing a brand new track today, Hozier has also just announced the release date for this second album, "Wasteland, Baby!". The new record will be out on March 1st.
You can pre-order it right here.

With "Almost (Sweet Music"), Hozier shares another taster of what is yet to come.
2018 saw the return of the soul powerhouse with lyrics to drool over, as he released his "Nina Cried Power" EP showcasing four songs, the title track featuring the legendary Mavis Staples.

Once music fans all over the world had digested the new EP, he quickly followed up with "Movement", arguably one of his best songs to date.

And now we get to hear yet another new track of the upcoming album.

"Almost (Sweet Music)" holds all the key elements a Hozier fan would want it to hold, but at the same time sounds extremely refreshing and slightly surprising.

Right from the first chord on, you get the feeling that you're about to listen to a very lively song.
Unlike "Movement", this track has a light feeling to it.
Whilst the previous single wowed us with elegance and mystery, this fine track is convincing us with a melody and rhythm so brilliant, was it a photograph you'd wanna frame it.

The combination of the instruments creates a, dare I say reggae-esque, atmosphere.
With a voice like Hozier's, an artist could get away with lazy songwriting - but that's one thing you'll search for without success when it comes to Hozier's writing.

Not only do his lyrics fall under the category of poetry, his instrumentals are crafted so carefully, allowing every element to play an important role.
With "Almost (Sweet Music)" we get a lot of the classic Hozier; the percussions, the clapping.
Yet something about the track sounds new - and we cannot wait to hear more of it on the album.

Behind The Song: "I Will Find A Way" by Jackie Venson

Hey guys!

Art is so very personal.

In pretty much every aspect;
the artists pour a lot of personality and personal feelings into their art,
and those who receive the art have the option to interpret it whichever personal way the choose to.

And sometimes we might forget just how personal art is.
But our behind the song feature is definitely here to remind us all,
by getting musicians to talk about the story behind their work.

Today I invite you to learn more about a track which is definitely going to empower you.

- Behind The Song -
"I Will Find A Way" by Jackie Venson

Jackie Venson is a musician from Austin, Texas (US).
Her sound blends Blues, Rock, R'n'B & Soul and therefore creates a wonderfully unique vibe.

"A woman, a guitar, and the truth.", is the description you'll find when you look up this powerhouse.
Jackie originally started out as a classical pianist, but picked up the guitar shortly after graduating from Berklee College of Music.
She soon made the jump from the classical side of music, to writing and recording raw and gritty Blues.

Jackie recently released her latest single, "Cover My Eyes", as a follow up to her EP, "Transcends" which was released on September 30th of 2017.
This EP led to Jackie being nominated as "artist of the year" at the Austin Music Awards, as well as a guest guitarist spot on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

We asked Jackie to tell us more about her previous single, "I Will Find A Way", because we think there are a lot of people out there who need to hear this track.

Today we get to find out what inspired Jackie to write this brilliant track:

""I Will Find A Way" is my fight song.
The year of 2018 has been a trying one, in personal and worldly ways. We as people have gone through times this year that made us question how we're going to wake up tomorrow, how we're going to continue on into next year and the years to come.

More personally speaking, I have been fighting this roller coaster of year in my own ways, having to leave people behind who aren't good for me - even if I had thought these people were folks I could trust. When having to call into question relationships that have spanned a half a decade or more, one I started to heavy, like I would cave under the weight. This is where this song has come into play, pun intended.

No matter how scary or uncertain things may be, no matter how much it might seem like I've hit a dead end, I go to sleep every night with the thought, "I will figure it out... I will find a way.""

Album Review: "Stay Awake With Me" by Dan Owen

Hey guys!

One of the questions I get asked the most when people find out what my little part in the music industry is, is "So what kind of music do you write about?"

Over the years my answer has progressed from "Oh, a lot! Pop, Rock, Blues, Folk, actually the variety is pretty big." to "Music that feels passionate and refreshing."

To be fair, both answers are fairly vague - but come on, what else am I going to say?
HITS is a home for all the music the team loves, so there really isn't an answer that lets people know what to expect.

But I like it that way.

And I hope that I can always surprise you with the music I decide to share with you.

I'm not sure if you'll be surprised today, but you'll love the music - that's for sure.

So let's do this!

Artist: Dan Owen
Title: Stay Awake With Me
Genre: Singer/Songwriter, Blues
Label: Atlantic Records
Release Date: 17th August 2018

Dan Owen is a singer/songwriter from Shrewsbury, UK.

He is one of those artists who effortlessly blow you away. He mixes Acoustic with some of the finest Blues and Rock elements in the most intense, yet thoughtful way.

Dan has been performing in public ever since he was 13 years, accompanying his sister on the guitar.
At the age of 17, he discovered his love (and talent!) for singing and soon started to gig his way through the UK.
Dan Owen has mastered the craft of playing everywhere which led to him playing 150-200 gigs a year.

His talent didn't go unnoticed after one of his performances went viral on the internet- Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood himself invited Dan for dinner to chat to him about music and offer him advice.

In October 2016, Dan released his EP "Open Hands and Enemies" and has been touring intensely, also supporting Birdy on tour. (We managed to catch one of the shows, you can check out photos here.)

"Made To Love You", the first single off of "Stay Awake With Me" has amassed over 13 million streams on Spotify alone, giving away just how greatly appreciated Dan's talent is.
All of the following singles got radio support from Radio 1, Radio 2 and Virgin Radio.

And now it's time for us to jump right into the review.

So, let's check out Dan's debut album!

Tracklist:
1) What Is A Man
2) Icarus
3) Made To Love You
4) Fall Like A Feather
5) Hideaway
6) Hand That You Hold
7) Parachute
8) Stay Awake With Me
9) Call My Name
10) Splinter

Opener "What Is A Man" greets you in the friendliest and warmest way possible; brass instruments happily chirp their melodies into your ears and allow you to dive into the album headfirst. Dan's powerful and smokey voice soon joins the occasion and takes the lead.
Whilst duetting with the choir-esque backing vocals in the chorus, you can clearly hear the strength and urgency in Dan's voice.
With "What Is A Man" building up towards the last chorus and shining in the lights of a clever arrangement and a catchy melody, us listeners get a good idea of what is yet to come.

Once we've had our first encounter with the opener track, "Icarus" is here to ease us into the depths of the album, giving us time to adjust to the serious side of Dan's songs. With vocals this big and gripping, it's hard not to focus on the vocals and only the vocals on every track.
But, although his voice is one you'll remember, it would be a mistake to ignore the well arranged and produced instrumentals.
The variety of elements, textures and dynamics plays a huge part in making the album what it is, as well as showing what kind of songwriter you have come across - a detailed oriented and passionate one.

The half-time point, "Hideaway", is definitely one of the highlights on Dan's debut.
It's raw, it's huge, it's going to send shivers down your spine.
The smokey and heavy atmosphere soaks you in right from the very first note you hear.
In fact, there is no way to listen to this track without the song fully grabbing your attention and holding onto it for the entire song.
Dan's way of expressing emotions through vocals is on another level, making it obvious that he can make you feel the same emotions he's experienced - whether you are in the same state of mind or not.

To sum it up: "Stay Awake With Me" is the kind of album that makes you double check to see if it actually is a debut album.
Dan seems to have already found his sound, yet he doesn't shy away from trying out new elements and it works in his favour. Each song is carefully crafted and plays exactly the part it is supposed to. So ladies and gentlemen, grab your headphones and join Dan Owen's journey.

You should listen to these tracks: Icarus, Made To Love You, Hideaway, Call My Name

Album Review: "Staying At Tamara's" by George Ezra

Hey guys!

Writing reviews is usually a very calm activity.

You sit down, you listen to the music, you write down notes and once you feel confident in your knowledge of the album - you start writing.

But every now and then you'll be given records (or songs) to review that turn this calm activity into a dance workout.
And that's what George Ezra's brand new record did to us.

But don't get me wrong, it's not just one blurry dance party, there are some emotional moments too - and that mixture made it an absolute joy to review.

Curious and want to join the dance marathon?
Let's do it then!

Artist: George Ezra
Title: Staying At Tamara's
Genre: Soul-Pop
Label: Sony Music
Release Date: 23rd March 2018

George Ezra is a singer/songwriter from Bristol, UK.
His sound mixes Blues with Soul-Pop and Acoustic-Folk here and there.

George studied at the Institute of Modern Music in Bristol and has been making music for a while.

In 2012, he played BBC Introducing, after his song "Angry Hill" was picked by BBC Bristol.
In 2013, George played at Glastonbury and released his debut EP "Did You Hear The Rain?" on which you can find his mega hit "Budapest".

Another EP ("Cassy O'", 2014) and a debut album ("Wanted On Voyage", 2014) later, George Ezra had made himself a name and was considered one of the most exciting newcomers.

Last year he give us a preview of the new album with his anthem "Don't Matter Now", which - along with his second single "Paradise", can be found on the brand new record,  "Staying At Tamara's".

Let's get to know the new album!

Tracklist:
1) Pretty Shining People
2) Don't Matter Now
3) Get Away
4) Shotgun
5) Paradise
6) All My Love
7) Sugarcoat
8) Hold My Girl
9) Saviour (feat. First Aid Kit)
10) Only a Human
11) The Beautiful Dream

Opener "Pretty Shining People" is what I imagine sunshine sounds like.
Now, lyrically, it deals with the darker moments one might have until the chorus kicks in and fills you with hope and understanding.
Musically, the light instrumentation and the chanting backing vocals immediately transport you right into Spring and allow you to find comfort in the relatable lyrics.

My personal favourite would be "Shotgun", an uptempo and uplifting track.
It starts of simple and almost Blues-y, but quickly devolopes into one of those songs that make your head bob along to the beat.
The bassline and guitar riff couldn't be more addictive and practically lift your mood and allow you to dream of the warmer months.
George's vocals guide you through the track and tell you the story in such entertaining and charming manner.

The first half of the album appears to be the upbeat half, whilst the second set of songs pulls you deeper into your thoughts.
"Saviour" which features backing vocals from First Aid Kit, definitely showcases the darker and more serious elements.
With George's and First Aid Kit's vocals colliding, you get a mysterious, powerful and hypnotizing mixture which has so much control of the track and its' atmosphere. Combined with strong drum beats and dark riffs, this one is as intense and brilliant as it could be.

To sum it up: Let's be real - George's voice is an absolute highlight. It's deep and expressive, yet refreshing and charming at the same time. But when writing about George's music, you just have to mention his talent for melodies, harmonies and arragements.
It seems like every track is so well thought out, yet none of them feel forced or unnatural.
Talent and passion on this level should get all the recognition and we've definitely got the record on repeat.

You should listen to these tracks: Pretty Shining People, Shotgun, Hold My Girl, Saviour (feat. First Aid Kit)

7 songs: Arlissa

Hey guys!

What have you been listening to lately?
And what have you been listening to when you were younger?
Which song has a deeper meaning to you?

Which track makes you boogie?
And which song calms you down?

Those are just a few questions we ask our guest DJs who join us for our 7 songs features.

Today we are thrilled to listen to Arlissa's playlist, which is definitely going to make you boogie at one point.

But first, let's get to know today's playlist curator!

Arlissa is a German and American singer/songwriter based in London, UK.

Born in Hanau, Germany, the young musician knew she wanted to write and record her own music ever since she was a kid.
When her father, who played in a Prince cover band, introduce her to Prince's famous song "Purple Rain", she realised how much she wanted to make music and quickly began writing her own material at the age of 14.

Just a year later she found herself in the studio for the first time and continued to work on her vocals and performance.
At just 19 she signed her first record deal and released "Hard To Love Somebody" with NAS and "Sticks and Stones" - both song did very well.

But Arlissa didn't enjoy the restrictions that came with her contract and felt like she was losing control over her music and identity.
So she took it upon herself and published her own songs online.

The acoustic version of her song "Hearts Ain't Gonna Lie" reached 1 million streams in less than a week without Arlissa having a management or following.
By now the song has been streamed almost 50 million times.

DJ and producer Jonas Blue discovered the song and immediately knew that he wanted to be involved. And so the two artists worked on the rhythmic dance version of the track which is a first taste of Arlissa's upcoming debut album.

Behind The Song: "The Paper Man's Blues" by Philip Whitehead

Hey guys!

It's pretty interesting how some features work out so well, whilst others don't.

When it comes to "inventing" them, you never really know which idea is here to stay.
Sometimes features you actually love, just don't work out and you have to get rid of them.

But other times, your favourites actually become everyone's favourites and once that happens, magic is about to happen.

One of those rather successful features is our dear "Behind The Song" segment, which returns today, so let's check it out.

- Behind The Song -
"The Paper Man's Blues" by Philip Whitehead

Philip Whitehead is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from London, UK.

His sound combines Folk, Blues and hints of Rock, leaving the listener with a lively mix of elements.

Philip has been making music all his life, but started releasing his own material in 2017.
We got him to tell us more about his third single, "The Paper Man's Blues".

Check out Philip's words below to learn more about the inspiration and writing process of "The Paper Man's Blues":

"This song came to me while I was reflecting on the best song Bob Dylan ever wrote - "Girl From The North Country", of course - and it occurred to me that, even though I consider this song to perhaps be one of the greatest ever written, I really don't relate to what it's talking about.
I'm lucky enough to have been with my wonderful girlfriend since we were both at school, and I have no idea what it's like to have to say goodbye to someone you love as much as the man in "Girl From The North Country" loves his muse.
I can imagine, however, that it's beyond devastating.
In fact, the more I fixated on this song, and this experience that I've never had to go through, the more devastated and distraught I became. So much so, that all I could do to make sense of the feelings, was pick up a notebook and my favourite guitar and let it all come out feet first.

I was so lost that the writing process took less than an hour, and the song I ended up with was totally different to the songs I had written before. Most of my songs are (hopefully) abstract comments about people and human relationships, but suddenly this one had characters; it had its own world and its own narrative.
I felt like I could have written a book about the lovers in this song, and I still do.
I also think that's part of the joy I get from playing it live, because I get to expose this very intricate mosaic of these two characters' lives together, but then I cut off before three minutes have passed and before anybody knows where the story ends. A lot of that joy might also be the childish satisfaction of holding all the cards, though.

Either way, this song is as simple as it comes.
Every note you hear on the recording was played by me in my living room on the same afternoon, and the lead vocal take you hear is the first one I ever recorded and one of the first times I ever sang the song all the way through. It wasn't sung into an expensive mic, and I wasn't plugged into some precious vintage guitar amp.
This song was just too urgent and too visceral to risk letting it wait another day to get it tracked. My girlfriend came home from work one evening and I was pretty much like, "Ta-dah! This is my new single."

And that was it.
I mixed it a few days later and sent it off to be mastered by the infallible Robin Schmidt at 24-96 Mastering, who did a stunning job of polishing it.
The response so far has been great, but I feel so exposed by the simplicity of this, that I'm definitely just trying to keep my head in the sand for as long as possible now it's finally released.

Whatever anyone thinks, I hope you enjoy it and stay tuned until the next one!"

Video Of The Day: "I Know The Feeling" by Rhys Lewis

Hey guys!

We probably don't need to mention it, but over here on house in the sand, we all love music.
Everyone in the team, and probably everyone reading these posts, has a different taste - and that's pretty amazing.

However, most of us agree that music with a deeper message needs to be given an extra loud voice.

Songwriters who address social issues and break standarts that society has created - those songwriters deserve a lot of respect.

Last year we've discovered Rhys Lewis, a singer/songwriter from London.
He's been wow-ing us ever since and his latest release "I Know The Feeling" is now excuse.

Make sure to check out this fabulous track and learn more about the reason behind the song below.

- Video Of The Day -
"I Know The Feeling" by Rhys Lewis

Rhys Lewis is a singer/songwriter based in London, UK.

His sound is going to make every classic Soul lover's heart beat - combining Soul with elements of Folk, Rock and Blues, Rhys is quickly creating a signature sound which will draw your attention to his work.

Spending most of the past year in studios in London, Nashville, Stockholm, Los Angeles and Berlin, the young musician has been writing and recording songs for his upcoming debut album.
His debut single "Waking Up Without You" hit #1 on Spotify's Viral Chart and reached 170 000 streams within two weeks.

Follow-up single "Living In The City" was just as strong and has now been streamed over 1.3 million times - a statement which probably speaks for itself.

To shorten the wait for his debut album, a few weeks back Rhys treated us with a live performance of a new song called "Could've Been" which was filmed at The Round Chapel in London.

And now he's here with a new music video for his most recent single "I Know The Feeling".

Rhys wrote the song for a friend who was going through a tough time. Both- the song and the music video- address the important topic that is men's mental health.

Just because we think what Rhys has to say, is absolutely brilliant, we'd like to quote him:
"I think there is a lot of bravado that surrounds being a guy and being 'macho' that stems from a dated idea of what being a man is - brave face, man up, and don't talk about your feelings.
But in reality, it takes a great amount of courage and bravery to be honest and vulnerable about how you feel. The pressure to be happy all the time and to be living the perfect life on social media is greater than ever, but I think if men could actually feel more comfortable being open in front of people or a friend, then that can change a lot of things."

We couldn't agree more and would like the video to speak for itself.
Allow the lyrics and the visuals to raise awareness and to resonate with you.

Enjoy the music and send it to a friend who might need it.

Video Of The Day: "Don't Matter Now" by George Ezra

Hey guys!

In 2013, parts of the music industry were stunned and surprised by a deep and bluesy voice - coming out of a British singer/songwriter in his early 20s.

Yes, I'm talking about George Ezra, the guy who sang this little tune called "Budapest".
We quickly fell in love with his voice and his charismatic performances and had the best time singing along to his catchy songs.

He's here with a new single now, which we might as well classify as the soundtrack of Summer 2017.
Check it out!

- Song Of The Day -

"Don't Matter Now" by George Ezra

George Ezra is a singer/songwriter from Bristol, UK.
His sound mixes Blues with Soul-Pop and Acoustic-Folk here and there.

George studied at the Institute of Modern Music in Bristol and has been making music for a while.

In 2012, he played BBC Introducing, after his song "Angry Hill" was picked by BBC Bristol.

Another EP ("Cassy O'", 2014) and a debut album ("Wanted On Voyage", 2014) later, George Ezra had made himself a name and was considered one of the most exciting newcomers.

Now he's back with a new single, "Don't Matter Now" - and it's exactly what Summer sounds like.

"Don't Matter Now" definitely marches into the cheerfulness of Pop music.
Carried by an uptempo beat, a funky riff and cheery wind instruments - this song allows us all to be carefree.
The fun chants in the verses, you just can't help but sing along - immediately.

It's definitely one of George's catchiest songs to date, yet it still wins you over with a lot of charm. And of course, his bluesy and deep voice.

Video Of The Day: "Downhill From Here" by Alx Green

Hey guys!

When you're working on your own and also for yourself, you sometimes lose sight of what you're working towards.
It's a natural cycle that you sometimes just slip into without really noticing.

As I've mentioned in a previous post, a lot of times it's the music which really pulls me out of this rather unpleasant cycle.
All it takes to spark the flame, is a song you really want to write about and share with everyone who is interested.

And that's why we have another brilliant song for you today.

Video Of The Day:
- "Downhill From Here" by Alx Green -

Alx Green is a singer/songwriter from Chester, UK.
His sound combines modern Folk with classic Blues elements.
He released multiple demo EPs before recording and releasing his first studio EP in 2016.

Touring Europe in 2015 and constantly releasing music, got him the attention and support of BBC Radio 2, BBC Introducing, BBC Radio Merseyside and many more.

After dropping everything to fully focus on his music, Alx started to make himself a name, touring over 22 cities on one tour and shaping his craft.

Alx is now here with a brand new music video for his song "Downhill From Here".
I sometimes like having songs for certain seasons - even though any song can be heard at any given time of the year. Some songs just really suit a certain time of year.

"Downhill From Here" is the perfect song for a day in Spring; the melancholic melody is light enough to not weigh you down. Alx' vocals are as smooth as ever and have a calming effect on the listener.

The guitar work on this track is absolutely brilliant and I'm definitely lacking words.
It combines the prettiest finger picking with enchantingly expressive percussions and beautiful strumming.

You'll just have to check it out yourself, you won't be disappointed.

It's music like this which makes running house in the sand such a joyful task.

Song Of The Day: "Living In The City" by Rhys Lewis

Hey guys!

Have you ever found yourself in a relationship with a city/town/village?
Well, I could probably write a book about that topic.

I have a love affair with Berlin and a messy love/hate relationship with my hometown.

Maybe a lot of people, whose careers depend on where they live and the opportunities that place brings with it, can relate to this.
Small towns are calm, comforting and maybe really beautiful. Yet, it's difficult to work in the entertainment industry ... because, let's face it, there isn't much demand for that.

So if you're stuck in a small town, you start dreaming of living in a city.

However, cities can be too loud, too crowded and too demanding.

Either way, there are pros and cons and sometimes it just all gets too overwhelming.
That's when a songwriter writes a track to cope with those thoughts and feelings.

And that's exactly what Rhys Lewis has done.
And we're glad he did.

Rhys Lewis is now here with his new single, "Living In The City".

"Living In The City" starts off with a three warm and comforting piano chords, accompanied by Rhys' equally warm and comforting voice. Subtle percussions as well as soothing backing vocals join the party and add more layers to the song.

It seems Rhys' songwriting is all about plot twists; he strips it back to voice and piano for the chorus before throwing an attention-demanding bass line our way. It's that bass line which lets you know this track is going to launch into something huge.

Bass and percussions create a beautifully supportive rhythm section and underline the intensity in Rhys' voice.

Towards the end, the song quickly builds up and becomes this anthem-like hit which will make you sing along in no time.
The gospel choir blends in perfectly and sets the scene in such energetic and soulful manner - you can't help but let it take you on this musical journey.

His debut single "Waking Up Without You" already gave us a clue of what Rhys' voice is capable of - switching from smooth and souly to raspy and smokey in such classy way.
"Living In The City" just keeps proving that he's not just a skilled songwriter, but also knows how to use his voice by effortlessly reaching high notes and transporting emotions through his voice.

Rhys Lewis has a thing for painting vivid images with his lyrics.
Whether you're in any form of a relationship with a city/town or not, you'll find yourself understanding those feelings after listening to this track.

"Living In The City" is one hell of a song and got us even more excited for the upcoming album.

Until we get to hear that, let's just hit the (re)play button.

Performance Of The Day: "In The Silence" by JP Cooper

Hey guys!

How much attention do you pay to your Facebook feed?
Honestly?

Haven't we all scrolled through our feed, not being too interested in any of the posts?
Well, I'm definitely guilty of it! (sorry to my Facebook friends... it's not you, it's me!)

However, I always end up watching any music videos being shared.
Somebody on my timeline shared the Mahogany Session's latest video with JP Cooper and I was intstantly hypnoticed.
Which is why I couldn't wait to share it with you!

JP Cooper is a singer/songwriter from Manchester, UK.

His sound is one of those you can't really pinpoint; it's influenced by the indie rock heroes, yet it combines folk and soul so effortlessly.

John Paul Cooper is a self-made and self-taught musician who started out learning the guitar and then joining a band at school.
However, he soon realised he was more comfortable making music on his own.

Soon JP started gigging his way through Manchester, showing up at multiple Open Mics has allowed him to get himself a name. By the end of his first year of gigging, JP Cooper sold out Manchester's Deaf Institute.

Three years ago Island Records UK offered him a deal.
Since then JP Cooper released two EPs ("Keep The Quiet Out", "When The Darkness Comes") and has built a loyal fanbase - online and offline.

His collaboration with Jonas Blue for the song "Perfect Strangers" has been streamed over 240 million times.

JP Cooper recently took it back to the basics when he performed "In The Silence" for the Mahogany Sessions.

Check out the absolutely stunning performance below!

EP Review: "A Flower In The Dark" by Lewis Fergusson

Hey guys!

There are many joyful events when you write a blog.
Really, I mean it.
And even though I don't think I'm very materialistic, I love receiving physical copies of albums and EPs.
Especially when I don't expect them at all.

A little while ago I received some lovely mail from Scotland!
It took some time to finally sit down and listen to the music, but I did!

And of course, I had to review it!

Artist: Lewis Fergusson
Title: A Flower In The Dark
Genre: Folk, Blues
Label: independent
Release: 22nd November 2014
HITS rating: 7/10

Lewis Fergusson is a singer/songwriter from Dumfries, Scotland.
His sound ties together elements of Acoustic, Folk, Blues and Rock.

In 2010, Lewis released his debut EP called "Head Keeps Spinning". Four years later, he shared his second EP "A Flower In The Dark" with the world.

Lewis Fergusson received radio airplay on stations such as BBC Radio Scotland and West Sound Radio.
He also played some great festival slots at Celtic Connections, The Wickerman and Big Burns Supper.

Here's my review of Lewis' latest EP, "A Flower In The Dark".

Tracklist:
1) Nothing To Be
2) A Flower In The Dark
3) Highway Code
4) No Warnings (live)

Opener "Nothing To Be" creates a slightly mysterious and dark atmosphere.
The bluesy guitar picking wraps you up and allows you to focus on the track without exceptions.
Lewis' vocals can be described as warm, inviting, clear and expressive, therefore it is very comfortable to listen to him presenting the songs.

A track that really stands out, in my opinion, is "No Warnings" which is a live version.
The song has something very calming, very hopeful to it.
You wouldn't know it's a live recording, if it wasn't for the slight change in quality, mostly due to the microphone.
This proves that Lewis Fergusson sounds exactly the same live, which is an absolutely fantastic thing to say.

To sum it up: This EP is a very charming and endearing collection of songs.
I have a feeling that it's perfect for Autumn, as it's got this warm, yet dark atmosphere. The singer/songwriter created some fantastic music and we're really looking forward to more from Lewis Fergusson.

Video Interview: Jack Garratt

Hey guys!

I've recently had a little period of time for myself which I spent reflecting on my work, planning things for my future work, etc.
The main thing I adore about running a website myself, is the fact that I get to work independently which means I can decide which artist I want to feature.

The fact that I also get to work with the acts I really want to work with, is very great.
Jack Garratt has been on my playlist for a good few months and I knew I had to have a chat with him at some point.
Just a couple of days ago, we made it happen.

Jack Garratt is a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter based in London, UK.
The musician who grew up in Buckinghamshire, UK started making music, or "noises" as he calls it himself, at a very young age.

With a talent not too many people have, Jack manages to combine multiple genres and creates a sound which is mix of electronic beats, dirty e-guitar riffs, jazzy piano parts and a voice that's just a varying as the instrumentals; ranging from a warm, deep voice to a brilliant falsetto, to moments where nothing is raspier than Garratt's voice.

So far he released three EPs:
Remnants (2014)
Remnix (2014)
Synthesiac (2015)

And earlier this year, Jack Garratt celebrated the release of his debut record, "Phase".

His skills and sounds received the BBC Sound Of 2016 award, as well as the Critics Choice Award at the Brit Awards 2015.

Before he played his sold out show in Munich (review and photos will be online soon!), I had a little chat with the talented and super lovely musician.

We spoke about his gear, surprising yourself, his very beautiful song "My House Is Your Home", polaroid photography. We also played the "Song Title Challenge" which he nailed.

Enjoy!

Album Review: "Pictures Of Us" by Kosi

 Hey guys!

I think I already told you that it makes me pretty happy when artists I've worked with before, ask me to work with them again.
I think it's a sign that things are going well, for all of us.

Kosi, a singer/songwriter based in New York City, USA sent me her album "One More Cup Of Coffee" last year. And this year I found a lovely copy of her newest album "Pictures Of Us" in the mail.

Artist: Kosi
Title: Pictures Of Us
Genre: Blues
Label: independent
Release: 2nd June 2014
hits rating: /10

Her music marches into a blues and jazz direction but still mixes other sounds into it. So let's call it a multi-coloured style.
Now let's get into the review!

 Tracklist:
1) Wild Is The Wind
2) I Already Know
3) Brianna
4) The Star Crossed Lovers
5) Pictures Of Us
6) Your Angel
7) Valerie
8) Untitled Art Song (in e minor)
9) Hoboken Blues
10) Lovers' Song (be the one)

Opener "Wild Is The Wind" is a cover by the absolutely fantastic Nina Simone. Kosi keeps the tempo, the intensity but puts her own twist to it.
Her voice has to be the main part of the song, you just can't deny it.
The warmth in her voice, the strength -they just soak you in, they captivate you.

Title track "Pictures Of Us" suprises with a male co-vocalist, both voices harmonize perfectly and give the song a lot texture. The tenor saxophone takes the lead for a lively instrumental part.

A song which really stands out is "Your Angel", a beautiful ballad where Kosi's vocals are completely spot on. It's a stripped down song, really natural and focused on the base of the track. It transports the emotion, the lyrics are honest, they are heartfelt.

Whilst on her last album I criticized the rather guitar based instrumentals, this time the record is rich of different instruments; trumpets, tenor saxophones and brilliantly arranged percussions.
"Hoboken Blues" gets, surprise surprise, a litte more bluesy. The sass in Kosi's voice is underlined by the instrumentation and works together with the lyrics oh so well!

To sum it up: Once again the talented singer managed to convince with her endless talent. Honest songs which tell lyrics in emotional and poetic ways. A big variety of sounds supports Kosi's vocal range and helps making this record one to treasure.

You should listen to these tracks: I Already Know, Your Angel, Hoboken Blues

EP Review: 'One Take Recordings' by Keeva

Hey guys!

If you have been reading the blog for a while, you probably know that I'm crazy about live music.
Hearing an artist live is the most honest way to experience a song.

Today I'm going to review the 'One Take Recordings' by Keeva. As the title gives it away - all songs have been recorded live in one take.

 Artist: Keeva
Title: One Take Recordings
Genre:
Pop, Acoustic-Blues
Label: independent
Release: 28th August 2014
hits rating: 8/10

"Melodies inspired by George Ezra. Emotion inspired by John Mayer. Sass inspired by Kacey Musgraves. Lyrics inspired by my life.", that's how Keeva describes her music.

The singer/songwriter from London, UK has an incredibly warm and souly voice and of course, a brilliant writing style. Maybe it's the combination of her influences, maybe it's talent.

Tracklist:
1) Louisa
2) Keep Them
3) The Drive
4) Screw You

Opener 'Louisa' already represents Keeva at her finest; atmospheric guitar work, controlling vocals - the simplicity of the moment. Her voice is smooth, souly, warm and you just feel like you can't get enough of it.

I can't help but be reminded of John Mayer's live version of 'Daughters' when I hear 'The Drive'. And I don't mean that Keeva copied it somehow. No, this lady has her very own sound and she should hold onto it because it's brilliant.
The support of a male backing vocalist adds more depth to the song. Beautiful arrangements compliment the atmosphere and give it a lot more grip and intensity.

'Screw You' in one word? Sassy! Oh hell yes. The upbeat track marches into the pop music direction but is still bluesy enough to be enjoyed by all "pop music critics". Supported by powerful guitar chords Keeva's performance is on point. Anger, energy, carelessness - all those feelings rush through me when I listen to the lyrics. We all know that one person we can dedicate a 'Screw You' to, don't we?

To sum it up: Melancholy meets sass. It's seems like there's nothing Keeva could not make us feel. Her voice is the highlight, no doubt. But her compositions deserve just as much attention. We want more!

You should listen to these tracks: The Drive, Screw You

Album Review: 'Wanted On Voyage' by George Ezra (Deluxe Version)

Artists: George Ezra
Title: Wanted On Voyage
Genre: Folk, Acoustic-Blues
Label: Sony Music
Release: 30th June 2014
hits rating: 8/10
____________________________________________

Hey guys,

I still remember how early last year the world discovered Tom Odell, a young British lad with a voice that got most of us drooling.

Around the same time this year we all did the same again and discovered George Ezra - another young British lad with another voice we can drool over.
The singer/songwriter from Bristol has been around for a little longer though. BBC Bristol started playing his music back in 2012, in 2013 he played at Glastonbury.
And again it was the dudes from BBC who listed George under 'Sound Of 2014' and apparently they were right, once again.

And now George Ezra is here with his debut album 'Wanted On Voyage'.
Is it worth the hype?
Let's find out!
