Gig Photos: Hudson Taylor at Academy 3, Manchester

Hey guys!

If you follow me on social media, you might've seen that I was recently in the UK.

Now, whenever I'm in a cool place, I will usually say yes to any music opportunity that comes my way.

So, once I realised I would still be in town when Hudson Taylor had their show in Manchester,
I knew I wanted to be in the photo pit for it.

And it all worked out - thanks to the wonderful Kara who made it happen.

Below you'll find about a million photos from the show, just because I had so much fun photographing the band and ended up with way too many photos.

I hope you'll enjoy!

Date: 21st January 2018
Venue: Academy 3, Manchester (UK)

Support Act: Little Hours

John of Little Hours can be found playing with a band, but played the support slot by himself.

Now, when a solo act enters the stage, there are two possibilites how the evening will go - it can either be difficult for them to entertain a sold out venue with people talking over their music, or they will completely win over the crowd within seconds.

John did the latter.
I was sharing the photo pit with two fantastic ladies (#girlpower) and I think I can speak for all of us, when I say that we felt a little awkward because you could hear the noise our cameras made - that's how quiet it was.

The crowd was listening to every word and every chord and was especially attentive when he spoke about mental health and how a friend suffering from mental health issues inspired one of his songs.

It's absolutely amazing to see artists use their platform (in this case, the stage) to talk about important issues.

If you are looking for deep and personal music, let Litte Hours be your new discovery.
You won't regret it.

Headliner: Hudson Taylor

As soon as Hudson Taylor and their incredible live band stepped on stage, the crowd was on fire.
The crowd that had just been so quiet watching the support act, was now singing along to every word and danced their feet off.

Whilst in the pit, I wasn't sure who was louder - the amps and mics or the crowd behind me.
Manchester's Hudson Taylor fans definitely showed off their singing skills and it felt like they were a part of the band.

The musicians made sure to incorporate multiple elements, including an acoustic performance of a new song called "One In A Million", which sounded like something straight out of the 50s and 60s era - swinging guitars and brilliantly dramatic harmonies aplenty.

Of course you need to tip your hats to Harry and Alfie for entertaining the crowd and for writing songs that people want to hear and sing along to - but you just can't leave the venue without acknowledging their incredible band.

Encore "Battles" showcased every member on top of their game - whether that's the howling violin played by Tadhg, the moody bass we got from Ronnie, the steady and brilliant drums played by Jonny, as well as the piano and harmonica skills Oisín showed off.

And - of course - the fabulous backing vocals performed by Manchester's finest.

If you want one piece of evidence that this gig was phenomenal, let it be the wonderful security guard who was definitely feeling the music.

Behind The Song: "Dreams" (cover) by Reigen

Hey guys!

This post was meant to go online two days ago.
Before I was getting ready to publish and share it, I heard the news of Dolores O'Riordan's passing.

Team HITS wants to send our sincere condolences to the family, friends and fans of Dolores.

Losing someone is probably the worst feeling to experience and we hope that everyone in pain can hold onto the beautiful and expressive art that this talented woman has left behind.

Last week we found an email in our inbox that shared a stunning cover of The Cranberries' "Dreams" and we knew we wanted to feature it.

It is so sad that we now have to share it under such devastating circumstances,
but we hope that Reigen's cover will help you remember the fantastic music.

- Behind The Song -
"Dreams" by Reigen (The Cranberries cover)

Reigen is a singer/songwriter from Bushwick, Brooklyn (New York, US).
His sound combines Pop and Electronic in the most graceful way.

We are thrilled to feature Reigen because we quickly became huge fans of his unique and mesmerizing sound.

Today we get to learn more about the process of his The Cranberries cover and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we did.

Check out what Reigen told us about his video shoot and the way he arranged the cover:

"The most shocking moment in this project was when I CAUGHT A BURGLAR while shooting the music video on my building's roof at 2am. My fam has had this footage on repeat and I've just uploaded it on Youtube so you can all enjoy my reaction.

My good friends Thommy and Cedric asked me to cover The Cranberries' "Dreams" for the first dance of their wedding. It was a side project I didn't plan to share more widely, but they were so sweet about it and people who heard the song kept asking me for it, so here we are.

The original is epic with iconic vocals so I wanted to approach it in a different way and highlight the heartfelt lyrics.

I restructured the piece to give it a new chorus using "you're a dream to me" in repetition along with the final vocal riff to luxuriate in that sweeping feeling. I added a dissonant bass to give it some angst and a section with lyrics about how my friends met.
"Three am wishing on full moons, city of millions but there's one you, I keep checking my phone, my heart could explode, I never knew moments so true..."

This song is about when that wish comes true.

I produced it on Logic X in my apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. I vibe in a small room next to a window where I people watch and hear the train going by. I recorded my vocals on a Vintage Neumann U67 at Ground Control Studio in nearby Williamsburg, Brooklyn and had the song mixed and mastered by Matty Harris (Kelly Clarkson, A$AP Rocky) with background singing by Argentinian singer Candela Cibrian aka Della.

For the video concept, I wanted to give the feeling that love stories are happening all around us - because they are. :)
I shot the video all over my neighborhood and the Ireland-esque grassy shots in upstate NY with awesome drone work by Controverse.

I hope you will enjoy this piece.
And also check out my original song "Rollin" - the vid was released the same week as "Dreams". :)"

EP Review: "Love & Other Things" by Alan Tukmatsev ft. John Thacker

Hey guys!

I remember when I first started out pursueing a job that mainly revolves around creativity,
I did a lot of research.
When you are meant to be creative every single day of the week, there come times when it gets harder.

To prevent those dry spells, a lot of internet gurus tell you to collaborate.

And it works, it really does.
Working together with people helps you expand your knowledge, skill set and creativity.

And in the best case, those collaborations have an end result which not only you get to call a success, but also the people you share it with will enjoy it.

Alan Tukmatsev and John Thacker teamed up and created a new EP, which we think is a total success.

Let's check it out!

Acts: Alan Tukmatsev ft. John Thacker
Title: Love & Other Things
Genre: Dance, Pop
Label: Independent
Release Date: 29th December 2017

Tracklist:
1) Don't Need You
2) Boys Don't Cry
3) Throwback

Opener "Don't Need You" greets you with an ambient and slightly mysterious feeling.
The song quickly evolves into a danceable track, asking for your attention.
With a subtle but steady beat, the instrumentation can be described as simple but every elements has an effect.
John's vocals complete the song, guide you through the emotions and project them onto the track by varying between soft and raspy highlights.

"Throwback" gets a bit more experimental and gives us more to digest.
The melody is colourful, the beat is vibrant and active, the vocals mix in perfectly and create the addictive vibe the song has to offer.
It's the kind of song that will remind you of Summer, of carefree times and it most definitely is going to make you dance. Whether you're up for it or not.

To sum it up: This collaboration was much needed and we're glad we got to share it with you.
Alan's instrumentals already speak for themselves but they feel a lot more vibrant thanks to John's vocals. The storytelling on the EP is vivid and relatable, it hits you right in the gut.
Play this when you need motivation and you should be fine.

You should listen to these tracks: Don't Need You, Throwback

Video Interview: Adam Barnes

Hey guys!

Explaining what exactly a blogger does can be exhausting.
Sometimes people just don't undestand that you can work online.

But really, it's simple - we write about music we like, we take photos of shows and we ask artists questions.
(And a bunch of other admin things, but let's not get technical.)

One of my favourite parts of the job is definitely chatting to people about their music and everything else that's part of their job.

In November I had a relaxed chat with Adam Barnes and today you'll get to watch it.

Adam Barnes is a musician from Oxford, UK.
His sound classifies as Folk and soaks you in with the beauty of the honesty, which he expresses oh so gracefully.

Adam has been making music since 2010 and has released a great amount of music since.

Starting with his debut EP "Blisters" in 2012, followed by debut album "The Land, The See & Everything Lost Beneath" in 2014 and another EP, "One Day We'll Be Fine" in 2015.

All those stunning pieces of music have reached over 3 million streams on Spotify.

2017 has seen Adam's return with new music; first single "Bad Luck" blew us away.
The following singles from his upcoming album "Vacancy At NASA" are just as exciting and we truly can't wait for the record to be released on February 7th.

You can catch Adam live during his album release shows in London, Amsterdam & Berlin - click here for dates and tickets.

When we met at Café Galao in Stuttgart - which has by far the best backstage area one could ask for! - we had a lovely chat about the upcoming album and what the writing process looked like, how he manages his Instagram (yeah, shallow but interesting topic!) and a lot more.

Check it out!

Mega thanks to Adam for the lovely conversation!

Behind The Song: "Wolf" by Boy Epic

Hey guys!

We have to be honest here,
we're still catching up on music from last year.

2017 was filled with great releases and has seen the light of some of our favourite records.
But we're not done yet discovering all the gems the year had in store.

But don't worry, we're still keeping an eye on everything that's happening this very moment.

But let's continue finding those tracks we probably should've been listening to for a while.

- Behind The Song -
"Wolf" by Boy Epic

Boy Epic is a musician from Dallas, Texas (US).
To describe his sound you would use the words "noir pop", but you'll definitely find elements of other genres here and there.

He centers his music around synesthesia, the state of consciousness where visuals fill the mind as a person listens to music.

Boy Epic finds inspiration in movies such as Fifty Shades Of Grey and Suicide Squad.
His song "Fifty Shades", which was inspired by Fifty Shades Of Grey, has reached over 12 million views on YouTube.

He is known for his expressive and cinematic music videos which are a huge part of his creative process, which is why you'll often find his name in the directing credits.

Signed to Hollywood Records, Boy Epic is currently writing and recording.

We're excited to have Boy Epic chat us through his latest single today.
In this post you'll find out what inspired the song, what the recording process was like and how you can compare the track to his previous releases.

Check out what Boy Epic has to say about "Wolf":

"I knew I wanted to write a song about ego, selfishness and insecurities.
Sometimes it's hard to write about our flaws as a society, but with this song I wanted to pull back the curtains and be real with my audience. "Wolf" as a deep dive into my subconscious and I am very proud.

Going into it, I knew I wanted to express the darkness, not only lyrically, but also digitally. I remember going to Cut Down Trees and saying, "Let's fuck up my voice for this one", and it led to us having a lot of fun in the studio.
As we started playing around with things, I immediately fell in love with the low undertone on my voice that we created on the chorus. It really just fit the mood I wanted to portray and is definitely a sound I plan on using a lot more in the future.

Looking back on "Wolf" in comparison to my earlier material, this song seemed to fit in perfectly. It was just as if it was just an idea I hadn't gotten to yet. Songs like "Wolf" make me excited for the future of my music. I am going to keep evolving and growing my sound, but at the same time keep my ideas intact and honest."

Song Of The Day: "Voices" by Cecilia Ebba

Hey guys!

It's the second Monday of 2018.
A lot of us are probably caught somewhere between being extremely motivated to make this year better and still fighting with some of the struggles we had to face last year.

Because let's be honest - January 1st does not take away your problems.
You know, there are those dark times, that I'm sure we've all had before. And we carry them with us, subconsciously.
We don't always think about them, but they are there.

This intro is not meant to make you feel upset - hell no!
But it's meant to remind you that we all have things going on and have to face tough times.

And I'm not the only one aware of that.
That's why I'm excited to share today's post with you.

- Song Of The Day -
"Voices" by Cecilia Ebba

Cecilia Ebba is a singer/songwriter, orginally from Northern Sweden, but now based in London, UK.

Her sound mixes a lot of elements and has found her own Alternative Folk signature.
Cecilia started her solo project in her bedroom studio last year and released her debut single "Sweet Summer Wine" in June 2017, followed up by the stunning "Breathe Out, Breathe In".

Today we're excited to put the spotlight on Cecilia's latest single, "Voices".

"Voices" is beautiful.
It's atmospheric, it's gentle and it allows you to lean back and take a few minutes to give yourself credits for relating to the theme of the song but still going on.

It's unexpectedly encouraging and comforting.
Cecilia's vocals are nothing but completely stunning and guide you through the song with such grace and empathy.
The soft finger picked e-guitar quickly becomes a familiar friend and you'll find yourself relaxing into the song.

We don't usually copy press releases, but we just love Cecilia's meaning behind the song, so we wanted to share it with you:
"'Voices' was born from a lonely place and was written midst a first re-encounter with some old familiar whispering demons, who for a brief moment stepped out from the shadows to show themselves in full light. It's about briefly allowing yourself to peek through an old door that you shut a long time ago, balancing on the edge, close enough to feel old emotions catching up with you while you're still at a safe enough distance to remain control and shut the door when needed."

Album Review: "Eftychia" by Robin and the Modest

Hey guys!

We're already five days into 2018.
Time just does not slow down, bloody hell.

But it's cool, we won't slow down either.

Don't you love the challenges of a new year? I mean, yeah, it can be all in one's head, but if you're one of those people who take a new year (month, week, day?) as an excuse to make a positive change in your life - you go for it!

That said, I have a fair share of things I'd like to change or just do this year, one of them is challenging and broadening my musical horizon.
That means reviewing styles of music I haven't reviewed before and ladies and gents - I'm doing it!
Never before have I ever reviewed an instrumental album - but today I'm challenging myself.

So let's do this and dive into the first review of 2018!

Band:
Robin and the Modest
Title: Eftychia
Genre: Instrumental Rock
Label: recordJet
Release Date: 17th November 2017

So let's check out "Eftychia", shall we?

Tracklist:

1) Run
2) Little Bird
3) The Mountain Is Calling
4) From Acapollo With Love
5) Winterlude
6) Eftychia
7) Koralle
8) Crop It Like It's Hot
9) Lücken

Opener "Run" doesn't give you much time to let your thoughts wander.
The strong and steady drum beat takes over your thought process and gently guides your attention towards the depths of the track.
Soft electric guitars support the rhythm section and let you enter the colourful world that "Eftychia" offers you.

"Little Bird" keeps the rather dark and mysterious atmosphere that "Run" already shared with us.
Slowly but surely the percussions and guitar notes let more light into the song and you can practically listen to the track unfolding its beauty. The string section clearly being the highlight, shining beautifully through the dark beats.

"Winterlude" is the little drop of colour you didn't know you needed until you hear it, allowing your ears to dive into yet another piece of Robin and the Modest's world.
It invites you to dream and helps you to forget the troubles of your day, proving that this album is the one companion we need to unwind, to dream and to just lose ourselves in the sounds.

To sum it up: My personal issue with most instrumental tracks is that I feel like something is missing, the vocals. Robin and the Modest somehow convinced me that a wordless record can still tell colourful and expressive stories and draw vivid pictures with clever arrangements.

You should listen to these tracks: Little Bird, Winterlude, Crop It Like It's Hot

7 songs: Hannah Slavin

Hey guys!

Happy New Year!
It's our first post of the year and we are more than excited to kick it off with one of our favourite features - the 7 songs.

This year is going to be filled with new and exciting music and we can't wait to be your trusty source for discovering true gems and learning more about them.

house in the sand is a home for music lovers and we've got tons of seats reserved for you guys!

Let's discover them tunes!!!

Here's to 2018!

Hannah Slavin is a singer/songwriter originally from Glasgow, currently based in Leeds, UK.

Drawing inspiration from legendary acts such as Amy Winehouse, Carol King, Joss Stones and Aretha Franklin, her sound walks on the fine line between Soul and Pop.
Hannah gives the classic elements a modern touch and has seemingly effortlessly created her unique sound.

Last November Hannah released her debut single, "Daydream", which was well received by her ever growing fanbase.

Once you listen to Hannah's music, you'll quickly find yourself wanting to hear more.

Listen to Hannah's debut "Daydream" here:

Let's check out Hannah's selection!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

1) a song which makes you dance
"Man! I Feel Like A Woman" by Shania Twain

Let's Go Girls!

I mean in what world does this song NOT want to make you dance?
It just NEVER gets old! I think it's more of a hairbrush in hand, strutting your stuff across the room kind of fance, but none the less it genuinely makes me feel ridiculously sassy and makes me want to move every single time without fail.
A very good alarm clock option because then you'll definitely want to get out of bed. What a bop!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2) a song that calms you down
"Livewire" by Oh Wonder

This was the very first song I heard of Oh Wonder's first album, and oh my it's just incredible.
The whole album is very simlar chilled out vibe with beautiful piano and little added synths. The us of both male and female voices as the main vocal is just so unique and really puts me at ease.
I also like that their songs never really climax, it's never over the top and their voices fit so beautifully together - love it! "Landslide" and "Drive" are also just as good!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3) a song with a deep meaning
"No Me No You No More" by The Staves

This song. Is just so haunting. It's so incredibly emotive. And I'm not sure if it's possible to not shed a tear or ten.

When I saw this song played live a couple of years ago, it's impossible to feel every single word and every bit of pain without weeping. They manage to create the most incredible, heart wrenching sound and make you feel completely submerged in their pain.
The Staves manage to hit me right in the heart with their incredible harmonies and lyrics.
It is so moving all the while being very simplistic.
It's so honest, yet so simple.

"Let me be myself again" just gets me every time.
Incredible!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4) a song that makes you feel nostalgic
"Super Trouper" by ABBA

Who doesn't love ABBA?!
ABBA has always been a massive part of my musical life ever since I was a kid and I have so many fond memories of their music when I was younger.
I think it was genuinely on repeat for every family car journey we took and it's probably the only band that I will never tire of listening to a million times.

I'm originally from Glasgow, so I always get far too excited whenever they sing that line: "When I called you last night from Glasgow."
It always reminds me of home and some great, great memories, even though I did read somewhere that they only used Glasgow because it's the only word they could get to rhyme.

Whenever ABBA is playing, it's always a good time!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5) a song which has accompanied you for a while
"Primadonna Girl" by Marina & the Diamonds

Oh my god! This song...
I definitely turn into my diva/sassy alter ego whenever I listen to this song!
I can't believe that this song is five years old.
For me, it's one of those songs that I think is really recent but then it's actually been around for a while - maybe because I play it all the time.

It's a little bit of an anthem and whenever I've got it on it'll be because I'm on a mission to get stuff done and just need to go into complete sass-queen mode.
It's definitely one of those songs that'll give me that boost of confidence - yeah, pretty boppin' tune.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

6) a song from your favourite genre
"Plot Twist" by Sigrid

I love Sigrid and I love Pop, so there is no doubt I'm choosing one of her songs from this genre.
She just seems to know what's what and is able to tell it perfectly through her songs.
"Plot Twist" is one of those songs that grows on you and you just fall in love with it the more and more you listen.

I'm all about lyrics when it comes to music and the fact she's so unpredictable with that she's going to say next, I love it.
She comes up with the most incredible phrases that are just as catchy and rememberable as the main hook!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7) a song by an artist / a band which has surprised you
"Places We Won't Walk" by Bruno Major

Bruno Major is an artist that I've been encouraged to listen to by quite a few people, but never really thought I would like it - but I was so wrong.
I was so shocked at how much I needed his music in my life. I had heard of him for a while because he used to study at the same University I went to and it wasn't until quite recently that I came across this song and completely fell in love with it.

It sounds like an old classic and transports you into a completely different place like you're in a movie. I love the home-y feel it gives you, perfect for snowy Winter weather!
