Song Review: 'Shake It Off' by Taylor Swift

Hey guys!

Yesterday Miss Taylor Swift held a livestream where she released her newest video for her single 'Shake It Off' off of her upcoming album '1989'.

I don't know if that many of you know it but I used to really like her music three years ago.
My taste in music has changed a lot but I still like checking back on what the artists I used to listen to are doing at the moment.

So when the web got a bit crazy about Taylor's newest single I decided to give it a try.

'Shake It Off' is a full on pop song, no hints of anything else. Funny enough, I have never really thought of her as a Country artists, even though some say she used to be. In my opinion the pop elements usually always overweight her tracks.

Swift's new song is about how she deals with haters, she shakes it all off. It's a super catchy summer tune with a clear message.
People always talk about you but you shouldn't really care because you know they are just taking crap.
If think especially the girls and boys in the teen age could really take the song as an example to feel stronger and more confident.
If Taylor can handle it (and let's face it - she has to deal with a lot!), you can shake it all off just like she does.

The video definitely entertains you; Taylor plays the main part by showing off her dance moves varying from hip hop break dance, to twerking and back.
I think you cleary understand how she ditches all stupid comments by just having a great time.


To be honest; I'm not the biggest fan of 'mainstream pop stuff' but I think the fun Taylor has and the confidence she has in the track really shines through and takes it to another level.
It's a catchy tun, it's fun, it's Summer. So why not?

Project 365 Photos: Update 2

 

Hey guys!

It's been a while since I last give you an update on my version of the Project 365 Photos.

For those of you who don't know about the project, it's really simple: you take one photograph a day throughout the entire year to document your life.

Now for the first 6 months I tried to only photograph the positive things of the day. For the second half of the year I decided to also document things that maybe didn't make me happy or didn't go well.

Life doesn't always treat us well but exactly that is life. In my opinion 'bad' things, just like the good things, define the person you are.
So it's ok to let them happen and also document them somehow.

Ok I'm drifting away, sorry.

Without any more rambling, here are some of my pictures.

May 25th, Berlin times. My favourite Liverpoolians The Arkanes played their first headliner in Germany. Good, crazy and chaotic times!

June 11th, got the kitten a new bed. Sat in there for about 5 minutes, then left. So glad I got a picture of her actually using it.

 

June 20th, I know all words to this song! It took a while to learn them though...

 

 

July 13th, found a balloon with a message on it. SO CUTE. Risked my life to catch it though, haha.

July 17th, Berlin, again. Had the best time ever and also caught these two guys in concert. Happy days.

July 27th, clouds clouds clouds.

July 28th, the clouds sent some rain. Melody loves her bed by the window.

July 30th, so proud of house in the sand. And so thankful for the wonderful friends I have. So I took an old school screen shot.

 

July 31st, the wild cat appears again.

 

August 5th, little 'press-photo-photo-shooting'.

 

August 7th, I love flowers.

August 10th, super moon and super cloudy skies. Meh.

Well, I think this should be enough.
I'm actually really surprised I could keep up with the project. It's definitely a wonderful way to remember the little things and the lovely memories.

Really excited to see what the next (and final) four months of this project will bring.

7 tunes you need to hear | episode 2

Hey guys!

7 tunes you need to hear premiered a while ago and you enjoyed the concept. Since the amount of music submissions I've been receiving has increased even more, I decided it would be cool to get a few out there for your listening pleasure.

Today Canada seems to be taking over. Rock, folk, pop, singer/songwriter - we have it all.

'It's A Feeling' by Mother Leads
I'm typing these words within the first few minutes of work time. Means I woke up not too long ago. Starting the morning with a rock song really helps.
Mother Leads are three piece from Ontario,Canada.
They play hard rock music and consist of: Neil Culbert (vocals, guitar), Ray Cara (drums) and Jordan Quinn (bass, keys). Formed in 2008 the band has released multiple EPs and is now about to release their debut album.

'It's A Feeling' is one song of it. It's a really energetic, forward marching track. Driven, burning riffs, strong and expressive vocals paired with harmonizing backing vocals in the chorus and a brilliant rhythm section. Massive!

'Lancaster' by Alea Rae

Indie-folk is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting genres at the moment. There is something about it that fascinates me.
Alea Rae, a three piece from Vancouver, Canada play exactly said genre. The project started out by just Alea Rae Clark (vocals, guitar, bass, synths) playing as a solo artists but when she met Jeremiah Ackermann (percussion, vocals) and Patrick Farrugia (guitar, vocals, bass) and they started working on her material, they soon became a band.

'Lancaster' is an atmospheric, enchanting track. Alea's vocals easily catch your attention; warm, at times deep, at times light vocals set a beautiful scene. The base of the song; the instrumetals absolutely work. Slightly mysterious riffs, folky percussions and dreamy backings create a track you definitely want to hear.

'GoldMine' by Rosco & The Dirty Plains

Seeing familiar faces also being part of new band projects is fantastic. Masterminds working together and producing cool music, what else would you want?
Rosco McCabe is no new face to house in the sand, we reviewed his brilliant EP and he sang a song for our second birthday.
Now he's joined by The Dirty Plains who are Andrew Glassford, Alex Cardwell and Jamie Brannan.

'GoldMine' once again is a track where Rosco convinces with his vocals; he starts of soft and endearing and within seconds belts out the raspiest and strongest vocals you could expect. Fantastic instrumental parts give the song so much grip, control the atmosphere and show what great musicians found together.

'I've Had Friends' by Elam McKnight
Who says you can only play one genre? Sorry for the expression, but only idiots say that.
Elam McKnight forntunately did not listen to these idiots and just wrote what he wanted to write. Originally he's been making music as a root blues artist but nowadays he varies genres.
The musician from West Tennessee has a new record out now.

'I've Had Friends' starts of quite calm but gets an interesting twist; the e-guitar that was being strummed so charmingly suddenly starts howling and gives the song more grip, more intensity.
An honest song with relatable lyrics and a lot of passion.

 'Ecstasy' by The Island Club
Brand new band allert! The band from Brighton, UK basically just started out and already has a brilliant single for us. Michael Askew, Julien Forsythe-Lewis, Dan Ely and Sam Cantlon formed the band last month the indie-psychpop four piece does not sound like a new band at all as the whole sound just works.

'Ecstasy' is an ecstatic tune. (Hah, see what I did there?!) The indie/psychedelic pop sound invites you to dance and move. Lead and backing vocals harmonize, the instrumetals are fresh and bouncy yet still brilliantly arranged. It seems like the song just flows out of the band. Wow. More, please!

 'Venture' by City And The Sea
 Alternative rock! Yes! I think rock will always be the genre I'm most into. (That's why a lot of rock music is featured, I'm sorry. But it's my blog. Haha)
City And The Sea (short CATS, I'd like to point that out!) are a rock band from Hamilton, Canada. They formed in 2010 but the four piece consisting of Nick Cino, Jon Daly, Dave Marini and Joe Piccolo has known each other for quite a while.

Their newest single 'Venture' is an infectious rock anthem. Lead vocals and rhythm section seem to control the track but still the rare guitar riffs absolutely convince. In fact, the riffs are so catchy, I've had them stuck in my head all day already. That's a good sign though.

'Hypothetical' by Grace
 Something slower to calm down after this rock marathon? Ok. Here we go.
Grace is a singer/songwriter from Washington, USA. She's been writing her own material and is just 17 years old. Volunteering for a DC program for disadvantaged children she also teached the kids more about music and helped them to put on a production of Alladin.

'Hypothetical' is a beautiful piano based ballad. Her rather souly voice absolutely controls you and and your attention. You just have to listen to her incredible vocal range. The track is emotional and I'm sure a lot of us can relate to the honesty Grace pours into it.

Playlist: Summery Road Trip

Hey guys!

Sometimes I get a little clueless of what to post.
Whenever that happens I tend to ask you guys for help and you are always there with brilliant ideas.
In other words - you are amazing!

This time you suggested a summer playlist and a road trip playlist.

I fell in love with both ideas so I decided to put them together and do a 'Summery Road Trip Playlist'.

Please keep in mind that I don't try to pick the "newest" songs. I don't even know what's in the charts.
I basically just picked a ton of songs I love to play in the summer time.

We want to start our road trip with a calmer tune, right? Keeva and George Glew wrote the perfect one to get into the mood.

'Bones' - Chris Stringer
I really think having some slow songs on the playlist is lovely. 'Bones' by Chris Stringer is such a jewel, we just need it on here.

'Lose Your Colour' - Lizabett Russo
Happy, light instrumentals and infectiously catchy and beautiful vocals. Oh it's summer.

'Blood Fountain' - Panic Tree
Alternative songs with slight electro-pop sounds really get me in the Summer time. Panic Tree treat us with this fantastic track.

'Fools Parade' - The Rivertairs
This is 'just a demo' but me oh my of course it's on here. If this doesn't get you moving, I don't know what will.

'Orphan' - Ciaran Lavery
Stuck in traffic? Turn this up, have a little jam session and I'm sure it's all good.

A funky, jazzy, folky singer/songwriter tune to enjoy our road trip even more.

Out of breath? Yeah me too. No worries, Liam has got us covered with a brilliant song to chase the sunset.

Thank god the wire of our radio is plugged in.

Ain't it fun being on the road?
 

'Battles' - Hudson Taylor
Folk rock with sassy lyrics. What a combination. Oh, let's sing along like there's no tomorrow!

I don't mind, blame this playlist on me. I'm happy with it. Whoooohoo.
 

'Matilda' - Martin and James
If you don't know the words to this, go and learn them. We need to sing along! This song represents Summer!
 

'Don't' - Ed Sheeran
I love this slightly bad-ass beat. Perfect for a nice trip to your favourite city.

'How Do You Feel Today' - Gabrielle Aplin
There are also clouds in the sky in Summer so it's ok to listen to some ballads.

Throwback Thursday on a Sunday

 Hey guys,

I'm sure a lot of you are on instagram, right?
So you guys probably already know what Throwback Thursday is.

For those of you who don't know it, I'll explain it real quick:
You basically post pictures which were taken a while ago. As simple as that.

I know it's not Thursday but does anyone actually care?

So I got a little nostalgic and started reading through the old posts ... Oh me oh my.

Here are some of my favourites:

"Dreams" - I once wrote a post about believing in your dreams even though others tell you they won't come true. I probably wouldn't write it exactly the same nowadays but I still agree with the message of it. Maybe you do too.

"Jim Kroft" - even though the layout of this post is absolutely horrible I love how every single word I wrote came from the heart. And what I love even more about it - after knowing Jim for about 2,5 years now I still think the same about him. He's a hero.

"Dan meets Portland live" - oh dear. This post makes me happy and sad at the same time - happy because of the memories and sad because I dearly miss seeing these guys perform. :(

"Concert Picture Collection" - photography has always been a part of house in the sand. Those are definitely not the best pictures I've ever taken but I like them because they capture great memories.

"Interview: Ryan McNeil" - yep, casually interviewed the man with the plan. Seriously, we'd all be lost without him.

"One year house in the sand" - first anniversary. That was lovely.

"Happy Photographs" - some lovely photographs taken outside. I like those.

"The HITS Readers Playlist" - this is probably one of my top five posts ever! So many of you submitted songs to a playlist and I absolutely loved it! :)

"Jim Kroft in concert" - joy.

"I got interviewed!" - what?!

"Interview: Shoot The Rabbit" - because the rabbits are the coolest guys and I love the pic they took for me. :)

"Video Interview: Martin and James" - first video interview ever. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

"Concert: Martin and James live in Berlin" - Martin and James and Berlin. What a combination.

"Interview: elias" - interviewed a really cool band from Berlin whilst in Berlin. Makes sense, doesn't it?

"Video Interview: Jim Kroft & Martin and James: a very Scottish decision" - haha, I'm sure this will always be one of the funniest interviews done for this site. Had the best time interviewing these three Scottish lads.

"Photo Sunday: Fujifilm Instax Mini 8" - introduced my favourite little toy camera to you. One of the most viewed posts ever.

"Birthday Countdown |  Day 28: Best Of" - 28 days of celebrating our second birthday. Each day another live performance dedicated to house in the sand. I still think that this is the coolest thing we've ever done! So proud of it!

"Soundcheck with Martin and James" - soundchecked with Martin and James. That's it.

"Gig Review: Tom Odell" - photographed that Tom Odell dude once again.

"Exclusive Performance: Jim Kroft" - my very favourite Jim Kroft sang a song for us.

"Follow Me Around | Concert Time" - took you with me to a gig and showed you what I do when I work there. It's kind of a behind the scenes of house in the sand.

"Concert Impressions: The Arkanes" - after two years I finally got to see The Arkanes live again. And it was a very eventful evening.

"Video Interview: The Arkanes" - ok, let's be honest; even though this was super chaotic it was also very very entertaining. Had a brilliant time interviewing THE rock band from Liverpool.

"My blogging equipment" - showed you some of the things I use to produce the content you see on here, turns out it was a good idea. :)

"Video Interview: Ben Barritt" - ohh another interview. Filmed in Berlin in front of the beautiful Spree with the fantastic Ben Barritt. Nice one.

"Behind The Scenes with The Arkanes" - oh those guys again. Went backstage, followed the guys everywhere (well... not everywhere!) and filmed a video.

"Social Media & Music?" - probably one of the most journalist-y posts and I love it a lot.

"Oh Berlin" - I have to admit it... I have a crush. On a city.

"Acoustic Session: 'Anne Next Door' by Thorge" - ok, who doesn't love those intimate acoustic sessions?

That should be enough for today, right?

I really hope you enjoyed it. I would love to know what you think of such "fun" posts. You know, the rather laid back posts that don't really teach anything but still are lovely to write.

Album Review: 'Relics' by Faded Paper Figures + Giveaway (closed!)

Hey guys,

I don't know about you, but sometimes I get these really weird needs. For example - in Summer it sometimes happens that I feel the need to listen to fresh and lively music whilst in Winter I'm happy with soft and melancholic tunes.

Firstly - does that ever happen to you too?
Secondly - this intro would not have been writing if I wasn't going to tell you that I found something fresh for my Summer needs.

The band Faded Paper Figures recorded a new album and what can I say? I like it.

Faded Paper Figures are an indie/pop band from Los Angeles, USA.
Rather spontaneously the group found together; the married couple Heather and Kael met John who wanted to write a few songs to get away from the normal work days.
Things developed and the positive feedback grew day by day.
But some opportunities work wise mean you have to move somewhere else so the band had to either stop making music together or write online.

Two albums were produced that way and now they are here with 'Relics', so let's get into that.

The three piece consists of:

Opener 'Breathing' starts the record in a fresh, lively, bubbly way. Synths and percussions lead the track and give it a electro pop touch, the bands indie-rock sounds slighly fades away for this track.

'Wake Up Dead' could be described as a playful track with some americana acoustic guitar elements - what a combination! The synths still hum along but keep things rather simple.

Who of you is good a learning fast sung lyrics? R. John Williams apparently is. 'Not The End Of The World' convinces with rhythmic and up tempo lyrics in the verses, catchy choruses and danceable rhythms.
You'll find a lot of genre elements on the record, sometimes tracks a more electronic focused, sometimes they have more pop/rock elements and once in a while it even gets a bit folky. What a variety.

The first offcial single of the record 'Spare Me' deserves to have that spot. Heather's vocals control the track and collide beautifully with the bass line and the rhythm section in general.
Probably the strongest, most expressive and catchiest song of the long player.

To sum it up: Faded Paper Figures created a brilliant summer time soundtrack. The atmospheric, energetic and lively synths definitely highlight the band's sound and make this album definitely an enjoyable one.

Soundtrack Review: Wish I Was Here

Hey guys!

Recently I fell in love with Sundays. Taking one day of the week to just relax and do things you don't have time for on the other days.
One of my favourite activities on Sundays became watching either a good movie or a good series.

(I bloody love Sherlock. There are just not enough episodes out!)

What's funny about me watching a film is that no matter how hard I try not to, I always end up judging a movie by the music that is playing. I know I know, that's absolutely stupid but I just can't help it. 

So with me being really into films on Sundays it was just brilliant timing when I received a mail from Sony about the 'Wish I Was Here' soundtrack.

'Wish I Was Here' is a film staring and directed by Zach Braff. I'm a music reviewer so I'm going to skip the movie details part and tell you a bit more about the music part.

Zach Braff did not only write and direct the movie, play a main character in it but he also put together the soundtrack.
In 2004 the soundtrack to his movie 'Garden State' was honoured with a Grammy; all songs were picked by Braff himself.

And for 'Wish I Was Here' it's not different, so let's dive into the music!

The indie pop band The Shins probably consists of Braff fans. He was the one who used their music for the famous series 'Scrubs' and his movie 'Garden State' and helped them a lot that way.
Inviting his friends to watch the new movie and write a song about it was definitely a good idea; 'So Now What' is a great calm indie pop composition with a fresh but also a vintage touch to it.

The whole soundtrack is rather calm and relaxing. There are up beat tracks such as 'The Obvious Child' performed by John Simon but still I'd say it's a rather laid back tune which kind of reminds me of a day by the beach.

The song 'Cherry Wine' which is live performed by Hozier soaks you in and is just a soothing as a lullaby - calm and smooth vocals paired with soft acoustic guitar picking.
Singer/songwriter folk project Bon Iver keeps this arrangement and also keeps it simple with 'Holocene'. 
'Heavenly Father', also performed by Bon Iver, stays calm but has a more out thought side to it. Harmonies, some synths, a nice beat - one in one: more grip.

The most expressive song, in my opinion, has to be the title track performed by Cat Power and Coldplay.
Cat Power's deep and raspy vocals paired with Coldplay's harmonies accompanied by beautiful piano instrumentals. F l a w l e s s.

Also - the comments on YouTube mostly were about the soundtrack and how good it is. I mean, that's a sign!

To sum it up: If the movie is as good as the soundtrack is, we're in for a treat!

HITS exlusive: "This Is Our Cloud" by Nick Liam

Hey guys,

I always knew we all have something in common;
we apparently all love music a lot.

But we also really enjoy the acoustic sessions on here. 
That's a brilliant reason to keep this feature alive by finding talented artists and bands with strong live performances.

And today I proudly present you an acoustic session with Nick Liam.

Nick Liam is a singer/songwriter from London, UK. He writes piano based songs which either stay stripped down or develop into full band arragements.
His musical influences are bands like Coldplay, Keane and Radiohead, that's why you will notice a slight indie-rock touch in his sound.

Nick's piano and vocal skills let the tracks vary from soulful, powerful and honest ballads to energetic, up tempo tracks.

'This Is Our Cloud' is his latest release which also happens to be his first studio recording.
And the song he recorded for us!

I'd describe the song as an energetic track with its focus on expressive and strong vocals combined with a beautiful piano melody. It starts off rather slow and intimate but builds up into a strong composition rich of emotions and intensity.

Enjoy the next 4 minutes, I know you will.

Interview: Orla Gartland

 Hey guys,

I really think studying journalism is absolutely brilliant. But some of the essays you have to write can really drive you insane.
Whenever that happens I'm more than happy to come over to the house in the sand and just get away by writing stuff I love.

This time I've got an interview for you.

The absolutely lovely Orla Gartland took time to answer a few questions.

Orla is a singer/songwriter from Dublin, Ireland. Music has always been a part of her life; at the age of 5 she learned how to play the violin and the guitar became her friend when she was 12.
The six string has not left her side ever since she started uploading videos on YouTube of her covering various songs.
The guitar based folk/pop sound became her signature style with which thousands of fans fell in love with.

Her debut EP 'Roots' showed that people not only enjoy her covers but also her original songs. The light and bouncy 'Clueless' just makes you want to have a good time dancing shamelessly (and singing along even more shamelessly, I would know) but then again Orla proves how she also has a serious side and wins you over with a softer tune like 'Human'.
