Video: HITS x Berlin

Hey guys!

Well, this is an interesting one to type up.

Our first ever house in the sand gig happened and it probably couldn't have been any better.
Not only did we have a brilliant lineup, we also got to celebrate this debut in a city that has been so important to house in the sand - Berlin.

I honestly don't know how to structure this post and how to stop myself from repeating what I have been saying ever since I got back from the show.

Hosting a house in the sand gig has been on my bucket list for many years now and I always thought I had to be in the business longer and learn more before I could even think about doing it.
But sometimes you'll meet people and you'll chat to people who ask you about your goals, and when you name them, they might actually help you to make them happen.

And that was exactly the case with this gig. I e-met the brilliant Christian Müller through the blog and when I told him about the visions I had for HITS, he helped me make it happen.
So, he told me about this brilliant venue in Berlin, that also serves vegan food (which was enough to convince me!) and after briefly checking it out online, I knew it was the one for this first show.

And then the artists came on board and I had my lineup together faster than I could've imagined.
I want to say though, that if it would've been possible, I would've wanted every one of my music friends to play.
But three acts were a decent amount for a gig and so we found a date and confirmed the gig.

I'm not gonna lie, the day before I flew to Berlin, I was just waiting for someone to cancel or for something to go horribly wrong - but that wasn't the case and this show happened.

And of course - this would've been a very lonely gig without everyone who came down.
It seriously made me so happy to see so many wonderful people at the show. You were all so attentive and just open to new music and that was the best visualisation of the house in the sand community.

But also - thank you to everyone who sent me a message on the day of the show. My phone was going nuts with all the notifications and messages from you wonderful people and with each message coming in, I felt even more empowered.

Now, enough blabbering - please enjoy our video from the gig:

I'm probably the queen of cheesy posts, so this is just my way of proving that I've still got it.

I want to thank the brilliant and super talented lineup;
that's Dylan Cassin, whom I've known for almost six years now and who has become one of the people I annoy the most. Thank you for flying in not only to play a brilliant set, but also to show your support. You're alright, I guess.

Thank you to Josh Savage who hasn't been trapped in the house in the sand gang for that long but has already been a part of some special HITS moments. Thank you for celebrating this milestone with us and for dealing with all the Golden Girls gifs I send your way.

And then there's Martin Kelly, who is part of the band that inspired me to start this blog.
The band let me steal a line from their song to make it the blog name and luckily they still haven't sued me.
For over six years both Martin and James have said yes to everything I threw their way and they've done that without hesitation.
So thank you playing the title track of the blog and for all the support.
Talk about things coming full circle!

Another huge thank you goes to Ryan McNeil who is the coolest member of Martin and James.
(Yes, I said it.)
Thank you for always helping out, always being supportive, teaching me how to babysit artists and for treating me like a pro when I was just 16 and trying to figure all of this out.

THANK YOU to Ardalan Aram at RAWCREATION for gifting us his time and talent - without Adi this video wouldn't even exist. You've been so generous and so brilliant, so thank you so so so much! I really hope I didn't butcher your work with my edit.

Also, thank you to Jack Grewe who was the sound engineer at the gig and provided us with perfect sound - which of course made the gig so enjoyable. The sound is such an important part of a gig and I'm so glad that you've nailed it. Thanks so much!

Thank you to Christian Müller - this gig wouldn't have happened without your help! Thank you for donating your wisdom and for helping me to make this happen - you've literally made the biggest HITS thing ever happen and for that I'm so thankful.

Of course - thank you to everyone at Barkett! What an iconic venue you are and you might not even know it! My vegan heart was so happy about the food and also the atmosphere. I cannot wait to be back and eat my weight in food. I hope you're ready for that.

And finally - thank you to everyone who has ever supported house in the sand - you're all brilliant and I'm so thankful.

Now that was a long post, wasn't it...
Sorry about that, but I had to get it all out.

Thank you for your visit and support!

Best Of 2017: a video

Hey guys!

Welcome to part two of our "it's the end of the year, we're so nostalgic" crisis.

Yesterday was all about the photos (and our amazing photographers) while today we are looking back on all things video.

2017 was the year of our 5th birthday, which is something I'll chat more about tomorrow. We got to celebrate it with 25 incredible acts and also shared our rather hilarious outtakes with you.

We had chats with some talented artists and hosted our first ever living room shows - an experience we got to share with you.

This year has also seen the premiere of a new video series, Cover The HITS - personally, that's probably my highlight of the year.

Before I started writing the words you're reading this very second, I told myself to not go to crazy on the cheesy phrases and to let the video be the focus of today.

However, I just need to thank everyone who was involved with house in the sand's YouTube channel this year.
That's everyone who appeared on it - all the Birthday Countdown artists, the interesting people we had chats with, our new Cover The HITS crew and of course the fabulous acts who played their songs for us.

But also - guys, thank you for just hanging out with us and checking out the videos we share with you.
It's been fun and we're forever grateful for your interest.

So, without further ado, let me present you our Best Of 2017 video.
It's one of those videos I'm sure I'll be happy about when I'm 80 and reflect on the fun I've had with house in the sand.

I hope this is going to entertain you and I would absolutely love for you to tell me if you had any favourite videos this year.

You can find every video we've ever uploaded on our YouTube channel.

We'd love for you follow us on social media so we get to share our content with you.

Gig Impressions: Charlie Hole in Vanessa's living room

Hey guys!

After having the best time hosting my first ever living rooom show in June,
(Missed it? Check it out here.)
I knew I would be hosting more in the future.

And last week, we did it again.

The fabulous Charlie Hole was touring Germany and decided to stop by in my very quiet hometown.

So I gathered some people I like to listen to some music I like.

Below are photos and a video from the evening, so grab a cup of tea and let the fairy light atmosphere relax you.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Date: 1st September 2017
Venue: Vanessa's living room, Germany

Headliner: Charlie Hole

Charlie Hole is a singer/songwriter from Bournemouth, UK.

His carefully crafted music combines Acoustic and Folk elements in such elegant manner.
Charlie started making and writing music at the young age of eleven and has been going strong ever since.

With inspirations such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits & Paul Simon, it's no surprise that we find a lot of personality and intimacy in his songs.

His debut album "The Joy of a Caged Bird" was released in 2013.
With loyal fans and praise from none other than Rod Stewart and three time Novello Award winner Andy Hill, it's safe to say we're not the only ones with his music on repeat.

Charlie recently released his new single, a cover version of Maggie Rogers' song "Dog Years".

Listen to Charlie's music below:

Just like the last time, we hosted the gig in my living room.
With some fairy lights, flea market lamps and handpicked flowers, the cozy atmosphere was complete.

Everyone invited was looking forward to discovering new music and supporting independent artists.
I think my favourite part of living room shows, is how calm and casual they.

You basically get to sit on a comfy chair or even your own couch, whilst a talented musician performs his songs for you.

Charlie did an absolutely brilliant job and I was impressed how well he worked the quiet crowd.
His entertainment skills were "on point" (tried sounding hip there!), and his music wow'ed everyone.

I mean, I could just go on and write some more, but I think you'll get a good idea of what the evening looked like from all the photos and the video below.

Hope you enjoy!

Here's a video from the show:

And that's it.

I hope you enjoyed this little post.

Have you ever been to a living room show?

Huge thank you to all the lovely guests who made this evening so lovely.

And of course - a massive thank you to Charlie for the music and the fun!

Thank you for your visit!

Best Of 2015: Videos

Hey guys!

It looks like I'm just writing the last post for 2015, a very special year.

It didn't become wonderful over night, and there were shitty moments just like there will always be.
But for house in the sand things have worked out very well.

The website got to celebrate many highlights such as our 600th post, starting to work with major labels, going on tour, meeting incredible artists and most importantly - seeing our audience grow.

When you set yourself goals, which is something I always do, you also start dreaming.
One of my dreams is it to be an influence in music. I know this can sound big headed, but it's really not. I want to be able to share music I think that should be shared. I want to be able to make other people find music they love. And I want to help out those who deserve it.

2015 showed that I can. And that's because there is an audience who reads my articles, who watches my videos and gives the music I love a chance.
Of course I enjoy it very much when someone compliments my work. (Who doesn't enjoy that?)
But the nicest thing you can say to me is that you found a new act you love listening to because of me.

I grew a lot as a person in 2015 and I learned so much because of house in the sand.
I learned how to work with different types of people, I learned a lot more about technical things, I started to love being behind and in front of a video camera.
And I learned that if one person might not work with you, you'll find at least 5 others who want to.

So in honour of a year which taught me a lot, here's our BEST OF 2015 video.
I know it's very long but I wanted to have it done like this.

Imagining that I'll have this video when I'm old makes me happy.

I hope you'll enjoy watching and I can't thank you enough for showing interest in house in the sand.

One Million Special: Outtakes

Again, thank you for a beautiful year online.
Thank you for spending time with me and thank you for support music.

Have a wonderful time and see you in 2016! :)

Lots of love,

Access All Areas: Hudson Taylor at Zwölfzehn, Stuttgart

Hey guys!

It's definitely no secret - I love honest and handmade music. And I also love powerful music.
You know, that kind of music which just grabs you.

And when both of these elements are combined, it's kind of like a jackpot.

On November 6th I got to work with the incredibly talented Hudson Taylor in Stuttgart. Not only did we film a few videso for house in the sand, but I also followed the guys when they went downtonwn to do some busking before their headline show at club Zwölfzehn.

Hudson Taylor are a folk duo consisting of brothers Alfie and Harry from Dublin, Ireland.

Two lads with a lot of passion and even more talent to make music.
They started out busking on the streets of Dublin and continued recording videos on their YouTube channel throughout the years which had millions of views by now.

Besides cover versions of famous tracks they also perform their originals and have released quite a few tunes.

Releases:
EP: Battles (2012)
EP: Cinematic Lifestyle (2012)
EP: Osea (2013)
EP: Battles II (2014)
Album: Singing For Strangers (2015)

Earlier this year brothers Harry and Alfie went on a busking tour through Germany, and just this week they came back and played a few headline shows.

I went to see the band perform at Zwölfzehn and interviewed them before the show. (Interview will be online tomorrow!)

The lads then went to do some busking in the city center and asked me to come along. Of course I took loads of pictures and also filmed some bits of their performance, you'll find all impressions below.

I hope enjoy!

The duo made a few bucks playing their songs on the streets of Stuttgart; people stopped, listented for a while and gave them some money.

After the set Alfie went and gave the money to a homeless man, that was just an absolutely beautiful gesture and shows what lovely people they are.

Well done, lads!

After a delicious meal at a very lovely restaurant we went back to the venue, just in time to see the support act open the show.

Support act of the evening was Kilian Mohns, this guy was fantastic. He worked with a loop station and recorded backing vocals and percussions live on stage.

With a fantastic mix of ballads and up tempo songs, the singer/songwriter warmed up the crowd perfectly.

The venue was packed when Hudson Taylor came on stage and sang along from the very first to the very last note. It was honestly the nicest crowd I've seen in a while.
(Big thanks to the front row for letting me take pictures in such relaxed way!)

Seriously, the audience was fantastic.
They sang, they clapped, I think they even danced. It was very energetic and very passionate.

The two brothers definitely know how to work with a crowd in a charming and entertaining manner.
Making jokes, telling stories, bringing fans on stage and interacting with the crowd was all part of an effortless show.

What really stood out was the band performing unplugged, no mics - no amps.

They started out on stage and went into the crowd for encores, you'll find some snaps of that below.

Besides creating a very intimate atmosphere that way, the unplugged performances also showed how incredibly talented Alfie and Harry are. They sound amazing live!

Setlist:
1) Drop Of Smoke
2) Second Best
3) Weapons
4) Called On
5) Don't Tell Me
6) World Without You
7) Two Of Us / Pray For The Day
8) Beautiful Mistake
9) Holly
10) Butterflies
11) Don't Know Why
12) Chasing Rubies
13) Care
14) For The Last Time
15) Battles

In the interview we filmed, Hudson Taylor told me they have been playing most of their shows with a band.
This tour was different as it was just the two of them on stage.

All songs were performed with two acoustic guitars, therefore they sounded just like the guys wrote them.

Here's a video of Hudson Taylor busking:

Massive thank you to Harry, Alfie and Ronan for being absolutely incredibly wonderful!

Thank you for reading!
