Behind The Song: "Young Wolves" by Racoon Racoon

Hey guys!

It's storytime time!
I wish we could all gather around a campfire and listen to these interesting stories together.

But since that's not possible (For now! We could always host a house in the sand summer camp!), we can just pretend while we read the stories.

I highly recommend you grab your headphones and a warm drink, and listen to the song while you find out how it came to life.
Today we're getting an in-depth story, which really allows us to go on the creative journey with the artists.

- Behind The Song -
"Young Wolves" by Racoon Racoon

Racoon Racoon are a chamber folk duo from France.

Léa and Léonard, who have been a couple for eight years, started writing music together in 2015, while they were living in Belgium.
They soon had enough material and released their debut EP, "Our Love's Funeral", in February 2017 via the German label Majestic Casual Records.

Their second EP, "Dawn Chrous", was written in the heart of the Italian Alps and released earlier this year.
Racoon Racoon recorded in Belgium, and together with musicians from Brussels' Philharmonic Orchestra such as Thomas Fiorini (double bass) and Emile Verstraeten (violin, mandolin) which Léo had met while working as a set-up engineer for Ramin Djawadi.

In July of 2018 they released their stunning cover version of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound Of Silence" and made us all fall in love with their sound.

Léa and Léo are currently gearing up to release new music in 2019.
To shorten the wait, they are looking back on their past releases and are sharing them with us again.

The wonderful Léa took the time to chat us through the story behind "Young Wolves":

""Young Wolves" was written in the very first days we arrived in Brussels, Belgium, in 2015.
I (Léa) have been moving a lot all my life, but it was the first time Léo left his hometown (Bordeaux, France) to settle abroad, and it was quite a chance. Furthermore, our first weeks were quite uncertain; no flat, no job for him, we kind of left in a hurry because I found an intership there, so that was our unique lead, the rest followed right after.

So yeah, Léo began to write this song being alone with a ukulele in a crappy flat... Not glamorous at all. Maybe that's why this song is so ambiguously sad, waving goodbye to the past and saying hello to a very uncertain future! In the moment it just feels hard to let go.

Long rainy weekends locked up in our flat in Brussels pushed us to experiment music together...
That was a first in 5 years. We find tuned "Young Wolves", arranged the melody, changed the lyrics and started writing a few songs. "Our Love's Funeral" was the first one entirely written and composed together. After Christmas that year, we started to think about recording them as a minimalist acoustic EP and began to wonder when and where we could record them.

Being both interns at that time, we had zero money to invest in the project... Léo was working as an assistant in a big studio called Dada along with two friends, Baptiste and Marin. We waited for weeks to have the studio empty to start recording... The opportunity finally came out in March: an empty professional studio for a FULL weekend just for us! We set up 5 mics (Neumann, U47, U67) on Saturday and recorded the 6 songs live during a long session engineered by Baptiste that ended around 5am...

On Sunday we did a few backings, Rhodes and Philicorda.
The recording process was a bit done in an emergency cause we knew there would be no opportunity for re-recording. And as a result, it sounded too demo, because Léo just had one classical guitar for the session, the only instrument he brought to Belgium. So he spoke to Thomas Fiorini, a double bass player he met while working on classical music recording sessions for Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones soundtrack composer).
Luckily Thomas loved our songs and we recorded his parts a few weeks later, tracking everything first take. Thomas was a real game changer. Léo mixed it in August, right after we moved from Brussels to Turin, Italy. Told you, I have a thing for movings. Our first EP was born.

We've always been amazed with how the audience welcomed this song, to us it doesn't sound the best, because we know, or think we know, we could have done way better. But every single time we've tried to reinterpret it so far, it was a failure, haha.
This track just has a peculiar vibe, someting really nostalic and far away... A Je-Ne-Sais-Quoi that makes its imperfections perfect to anyone who listens, at least that's what we're told. The future will tell us if we can improve it or not! :)"

7 songs: Racoon Racoon

Hey guys!

Okay, I have this routine whenever I edit photos.
I sit at my desk, have my vinyl player about two metres away from me and listen to my "Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits" record.

I do that because I'm usually a very active person - I don't really enjoy sitting still for long (which is why I am terrified of long-haul flights and bus journeys to Berlin).

So, Simon & Garfunkel do the one thing usually only yoga does for me, they calm me down and allow me to focus on whatever task I might be tackling.
Not only does it mean that they can take credit for most of the edited photos you can see on my Instagram, it also means that I enjoy their music a lot.

Today I get to introduce you to a band who has covered one of my favourite S&G songs (is that even the official abbreviation?) and I can't wait for you to listen to it.

On July 13th, they've released their beautiful cover of "The Sound Of Silence", an iconic song by the ever so brilliant Simon & Garfunkel.

Most of us acoustic fans probably adore the track.
We might've grown up with it or we found the track later on in life.

Either way, most of us know it - and if you don't, this doesn't make you any less cool. You've got all the time in the world to discover the classics, so please don't let anyone shame you for not knowing them all just yet.

Wheew, that got deep.

Let's let the music take over and let's all dive headfirst into this beautiful cover.

1) a song which makes you dance
"Soup For Brains" by David Whoolhouse

This song triggers something I can't quite grasp, but anytime I listen to it I feel like dancing in my living room with a glass of Martini and a pyjama on. Absolutely sexy.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2) a song that calms you down
"The Chopin Project" by Ólafur Arnalds & Alice Sara Ott

Particularly the first track, "Verses", and "Reminiscence", but I usually listen to the whole album almost each day in the morning when I do yoga. I think I'll never get bored of it.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3) a song with a deep meaning
"Cold Water" by Damien Rice

This song is historic for Léo and I. It echoes to the first moment we were together. (Cheesy.)

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4) a song that makes you feel nostalgic
"Veridis Quo" by Daft Punk

Don't know why, but this song is deeply nostalgic to me.
When I listen to it, I feel overwhelmed by something beautiful and sad. It has a touch of classic combined with a rhythm that goes on and on and never stops, as if life would, and will, continue whether or not you're on board.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5) a song which has accompanied you for a while
"Bunker" by Balthazar

We discovered Balthazar going to an Editors concert years ago in Paris.
They were their support band and we fell in love with them that day. I've been listening to their songs since then, especially their last album, "Thin Walls", and this track, "Bunker". We're also huge fans of their recent solo projects.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

6) a song from your favourite genre
"Life In Vain" by Daniel Johnston

I discovered Daniel thanks to NPR tiny desk.
This track is legendary.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7) a song by an artist / a band which has surprised you
"Feels Like Home" by Marti West

This song is really cool, I like it very much.
It is really cool and sounds warm. Marti produced it alone, I was really impressed when I first heard it.

Performance Of The Day: "Go On" by Tom Leeb

Hey guys!

It's been a while since our last Performance Of The Day - which is really strange because we've been spoilt with brilliant performances in the past few months.

And so it's about time to hype up some fine live performances again and share those videos with you which just leave us wanting to go to a gig immediately.

Live music can be therapy; it can be healing, it can be stress-relieving, it can help you forget your troubles and worries - so why only feel these feelings when you're at a gig?
We're all about letting music cure us, so we're taking live music with us everywhere we go - including this little ol' website.

So let's dive into today's performance, shall we?

- Performance Of The Day -
"Go On" by Tom Leeb

Tom Leeb is a singer, songwriter, actor and comedian from Paris, France.
His sound is on the acoustic side of Blues Rock and is headed towards alternative Pop sounds.

With influences varying from John Mayer, Ben Howard, Bon Iver and Matt Corby to Frank Sinatra, Gene Harris and Jamie Cullum, Tom's range of influences is as wide as his sound.

His love for melodies and the depth of his lyrics add a timeless feeling to his music and allows you to dive deep into the songs as he presents them in such thoughtful ways.
With some tracks dealing with the emotions we feel when we're in love and others describing thoughts about patience and the perception of time, this variety of topics makes sure every listener finds something to relate to.

This acoustic performance of Tom's new single "Go On" was filmed in the stunning church of Oppède-le-Vieux.

The live version doesn't stray too far from the original which is a perfect example of the simplicity of Tom's sound.

Although the elements of the song are simple, it's anything but shallow, there are so many details to discover.
With soothing, yet expressive and souly vocals, Tom wins us over in no time and allows us to dive into the track and get lost in the music.
His love for melodies is shining through and it's probably what makes this track such a joy to listen to.

Video Premiere: "Banshees" by Pamela Hute

Hey guys!

Don't you think music is a magical thing?
I mean.. what exactly is music?
It's melodies and rhythms, lyrics and harmonies, beats and riffs.
It's something which moves millions and millions of people every single day.

It's something we can only hear. We can't touch it. But it touches us.
It's art. And it can be definied in thousands of different ways.

I guess, it's magic.

And today, as per usual, house in the sand gets to share some magic with you.

Video Premiere: "Banshees" by Pamela Hute

Pamela Hute is a musician from Paris, France.
Pin-pointing her sound is like taming a lion- it's rather difficult.
She dances somewhere inbetween Electronic, Pop, Post-Punk and Rock and makes this mixture work beautifully.

Her love for music has been present for her entire life and early on she formed a band, in which she played until 2006.
Soon after that she started her solo career which has proven to be exactly the right path to take.

In 2010 her autobiographical debut album "Turtle Tales From Overseas" convinced the critics and pleased Pamela's loyal fanbase.

With two band mates, Igor Bolender on snythesisers and Ernest Lo on drums, Pamela got to play some of Frances most important stages.

Follow-up album "Bandit" was presented to the world in 2013.
Ever since then, the musician expanded her band and has shared her third longplayer "Highline" in February 2017.

"Highline" is inspired by her travels and has turned her sound into a fairytale of Pop and Indie.

And today we are extremely excited to share Pamela Hute's brand new music video for "Banshees" with you.
If I had to sum it up in three words, I'd say: artistic, expressive and sparkly.
Those are some great words, right?

As we are hosting the German premiere of the music video, you are some of the first people to check out "Banshees".
