Performance Of The Day: "Into Yellow" by Martin Luke Brown

Hey guys!

Exactly two weeks ago I had a fabulous time, sitting in a very fancy chair, watching Martin Luke Brown play a fantastic show in London.

He opened his set with a stunning acoustic version of his most recent single "Into Yellow".
I've had the song on repeat for a good few hours when I first heard it - and this acoustic version was equally addictive.

To my delight - and your delight once you hear it - said acoustic version has just been published.

Of course that means we have to feature it today!
So check it out!

- Performance Of The Day -
"Into Yellow" by Martin Luke Brown

Martin Luke Brown is a singer/songwriter from Leicester, UK.
Genrefying his music is definitely no simple thing to do as Martin combines pop elements with soulful vocals, a folky falsetto and electrifying beats. Maybe we'll settle for Alternative.

The young musician started gigging at the age of 14, uses the keyboard and the guitar on stage and also started working with backing tracks at live shows.

Back in 2014, house in the sand was introduced to Martin Luke Brown's music and we were convinced we'd be able to watch him go and create amazing music.

Martin has released a bunch of songs so far; "Nostalgia", "Scars On Scars" and "Love Me Sober" being his some of his most recognizable singles, which made him gain a loyal fanbase.

A few songs later, Martin seems to have found a new sound, which he presented proudly when releasing "Into Yellow". Not only does it feel like "a bit of a new beginning" for him, but also for his loyal followers.
The track is a stunning ballad with a very modern twist to it and keeps the listeners on their toes throughout the entire song.

And just to make us fall for the track even more, Martin has released a live and piano based performance of the song.

The stripped back version of "Into Yellow" allows the lyrics to fill the room with their fragile beauty.
It's a peaceful atmosphere which carefully wraps you in and gives you the chance to focus on the song.

Martin's seemingly effortless soul vocals, are here to hypnotize you and guide you through the song in such carefully crafted manner.
The calm piano chords first appear rather simple, but soon hit you with so much depth and emotion, that you might need to sit down.

Performance Of The Day: "Shadow & Light" by Martin Luke Brown

Hey guys!

I remember when I got my first ever laptop for Christmas.
I don't remember the year but it's obviously been a few Christmases back.

The first thing I would always do, is go on YouTube and watch acoustic/live performances of any artists I enjoyed.
Many years later, it's still one of my favourite things to do.
YouTube is one of those platforms I definitely spend too much time on, but that's alright.

Because of my love for acoustic performances, the "Performance Of The Day" feature is one those features I kind of write for myself.

So yeah, let's dive into today's performance by Martin Luke Brown.

His newest single "Shadow & Light" was one of those songs that has been released at the most appropriate time.
There are songs that you can relate to when you're in a difficult relationships. Or songs that you can relate to when you're feeling really happy.

And then there are song that, in my opinion, an entire generation can relate to.

"Shadow & Light" is one of those.
I can guarantee that most of us can relate to at least one line of this song because of what it going on in the world.
My favourite line would be:
- nothing will change unless we keep our hearts open -

This piano based performance by Martin Luke Brown and students of BIMM London for Bee Happy Sessions truly captures the honesty of the song.
The choir represents the united thought that especially this generation has.

Martin's vocals are, as usual, on point and souly as ever.

I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy this one!

Video Interview: Martin Luke Brown

Hey guys!

As an interviewer, you have to decide what kind of interviewer you want to be.
You can either be that really badass-like journalist who asks questions that make the artists/bands sweat, shake and go completely nervous about. You know, the provocative kind of interviewer that actually my journalism teacher told me to be.

Or you can be an absolutely hippie who asks relaxed questions in order to have that kind of conversation you'd have over a cup of tea. Or coffee, if you prefer that.

I've decided to put on the flower crown and be the hippie who asks questions I'd also ask my mates.
So far I don't regret this decision!

I had a lovely and rather funny chat with Martin Luke Brown recently!

Gig Photos: Jack Garratt at Freiheiz, Munich

Hey guys!

The amount of things I've learned about music within the last few years, is definitely massive.
I have tried to soak in every new thing I've come across.

So I got a bit of knowledge when it comes to different guitars, pedals, the differences between certain cymbals, loopstations and the live music side of things.
I love learning things and so picking the brains of my music friends is something I do regularly.

Especially on stage you get to see a variety of techniques.
A variety of styles.

When I first found out about Jack Garratt's live sound, I knew his style was something I hadn't seen before.
I know a lot of artists who play multiple instruments at the same time, yet the way this guy does it, was new to me. Therefore it was obvious that analyzing Jack's way of making music was going to introduce me to a lot of new knowledge.

YouTube gives you a beautiful idea of what to expect when seeing an artist live, but it will never be the same as attending a gig (in real life!!).

I got to photograph and watch Jack Garratt at Freiheiz in Munich, Germany on May 8th and am happy to share some impressions with you today.

(I also got to film a little chat with Jack in which he told me more about his gear, etc. You can watch it here: Interview: Jack Garratt)

Martin Luke Brown brought his full band sound to Munich and proved that the Brits got talent.
(Hah, what a pun!)
With his soulful voice being the centre of his honest songs, the crowd enjoyed his performance from the very beginning.

I personally find Martin's sound very refreshing. It's just him on stage, yet he manages to re-create a very gig-worthy sound by using today's technology wisely.

Little chats with the audience between the songs allowed the listeners to get an idea of the person behind the music.

To sum it up: Martin Luke Brown was/is the perfect opener for Jack Garratt and is "one to watch" himself.

Please check out Martin's newest track "Love Me Sober", it's fabulous:

MAIN ACT: Jack Garratt

Jack Garratt is a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter based in London, UK.
The musician who grew up in Buckinghamshire, UK started making music, or "noises" as he calls it himself, at a very young age.

With a talent not too many people have, Jack manages to combine multiple genres and creates a sound which is mix of electronic beats, dirty e-guitar riffs, jazzy piano parts and a voice that's just a varying as the instrumentals; ranging from a warm, deep voice to a brilliant falsetto, to moments where nothing is raspier than Garratt's voice.

So far he released three EPs:
Remnants (2014)
Remnix (2014)
Synthesiac (2015)

And earlier this year, Jack Garratt celebrated the release of his debut record, "Phase".

His skills and sounds received the BBC Sound Of 2016 award, as well as the Critics Choice Award at the Brit Awards 2015.

I like describing gigs in three words.. But I'm afraid that won't work for Jack Garratt's live show.

So instead of using only three words, I'll just keep going until I run out of them.

Energetic. Passionate. Drums. Keyboard. Drumpad. Dirty guitar riffs. Loops. Full sound. Soul. So much soul.

Bass. Jazzy piano bits. Blues. Electronic. Rock. Drumsssss. More drums. Synths. Fast paced.

Multi-tasking. Mind blowing. Backing tracks. Solo. Pedals. That bass drum.

Falsetto. Deep vocals. What a voice. Raspy. Smooth. So much control.

Funny guy. Actually a comedia. Brilliant crowd interaction. Hilarious.

Spontaneous Prince cover. What. Purple Rain.

Beautiful ballads. Funky intros.

Spot on entertainment.

Wow.

Did I mention the drums?

Song Of The Day: 'Nostalgia' by Martin Luke Brown

Hey guys,

Do you ever feel nostalgia?
Well, I do. Quite often to be honest. And I like wandering through early days in my mind, remembering little things from my childhood like running in a princess dress thinking I could do everything.
(I still do that.) (Not in a princess dress though.)

And 'Song Of The Day' is exactly about that feeling - feeling nostalgic about your childhood and dealing with growing up.

Martin Luke Brown is the artist behind our song of the day. He started making music at the age of 14 and has been writing and recording ever since. The musician from Leicester, UK could be classified as alternative pop mixed with acoustic and soul elements.
