New Music Every Month: Mark Mathews

Hey guys!

The longer we keep house in the sand going,
the more we appreciate all the creators we feature.

When you are constantly creating something new, you need a lot of energy and willpower to continue. Especially if you are emotionally connected to what you are working on.

I think we all need challenges every now and then, but it can be quite difficult to challenge yourself.

That's why we are thrilled to tell you more about our friend Mark Mathews and his incredible music challenge.

Mark Mathews is a singer/songwriter from London, UK.
He's been around since 2006 and is going stronger than ever.

Influenced by the legends such as The Beatles, The Kinks and Ryan Adams; Mark's sound is a mixture of folk and indie-pop.

You can catch Mark playing his way through London and the rest of the UK pretty much all the time.
With three EPs and one album out, he's got enough material to showcase his musical variety.

He's not planning on stopping any time soon and has a special project going on at the moment.

He has set himself the goal to release one new single every month throughout 2017.

And so far - he's nailing it!

Today marks the half way point of #NewMusicEveryMonth and in honour of that, we're here to showcase the six songs we've heard so far!

So buckle up - it's going to be one hell of a ride!

____________________________________________________________________

January: "Grape Juice"

"Grape Juice" got us shaking our hips like mad in January.
It was all about badass basslines and energetic rhythms - and it was exactly what we needed in the colder months.
Mark started the project with a funky gem and showed us that he's ready to boogie - and so are we.

Who needs alcohol when there's "Grape Juice"? Let's get this party started!

____________________________________________________________________

February: "California Quickly"

Mark is wonderful guy; after making us dance through January, he gave us a little break in February.
"California Quickly" slows down the pace a little and allows us to appreciate the calmer moments.

Who else gets the travel blues in February? I know, I do.
This track is one for all of us who need an escape every now and then.
The song still classifies as an upbeat track, but has its focus on the moody e-guitar riffs and percussions.

If ever we end up driving through California, we'll be blasting this fine tune!

____________________________________________________________________

March: "The Informer"

March was the month in which Mark allowed us to settle down for 4 minutes and 14 seconds.

With "The Informer" things got a little bit more thoughtful and atmospheric. The mood of the track definitely gets darker and more mysterious and takes you on an intense journey.

Mark has his way of letting you lose yourself in every track he puts out there - you find yourself noticing the details, the obvious elements and he makes you read between the lines, discovering even more class in each track.

____________________________________________________________________

April: "Dying To Stay Alive"

Loyal house in the sand readers might recognize April's gem - "Dying To Stay Alive".
Mark debuted this song during our fifth birthday party back in February.
(Check out his wonderful performance here.)

It's one of those tracks that you won't mind having on repeat for hours - it's rather simple, yet anything but shallow. The little e-guitar details give this acoustic guitar based track a lot of grip, whilst the backing vocals add depth and intensity.

This one really showcases Mr Mathews' writing skills.

____________________________________________________________________

May: "This Song's For You"

I'm sure we all know those tracks that just make you tap your feet along with the beat, right?

May track "This Song's For You" is one of those!
It's charming, it's up-tempo, it's light and it makes us happy - because we can all pretend that this song is for us.

One thing that stands out, is how many facettes Mark is showcasing with these tracks. You get a fascinating variety of sounds and genres - and all songs are so well put together. It's an absolute joy to listen to them.

____________________________________________________________________

June: "Ooh La La"

It's been a while since we had a boogie, right?
Well, fear not- Mark's got us covered.

"Ooh La La" is going to get you up on your feet as soon as you hear the first few chords.
It's got a carefree feeling to it. The funky bassline works hand in hand with the groovy riffs.
Mark's voice charmingly guides us through the track and makes sure we're all singing along to the catchy chorus.

With the sixth song of the year, we've reached the half way point and it just makes us even more excited for what's yet to come.

And that's it - so far! Team HITS can't wait to hear the rest of the songs - #NewMusicEveryMonth has definitely given us something to look forward to each month.

Hats off to Mr Mathews!

Thank you for your visit!

Day 20: Mark Mathews | #HITSBC17

Hey guys!

I remember when I first got the rough idea of starting this countdown,
I thought I wouldn't be able to find enough acts to take part in it - but I did.
And after the first year of hosting this event, I knew it was going to be a returning project.

And I am so glad that it now is something we can look forward to each year.

We're not even done with this year's countdown and I already can't wait for next year.
Guess that's a good sign, right?

Alright, let's check out day 20!

What is #HITSBC17?
HITSBC17 stands for house in the sand's Birthday Countdown 2017.
Throughout the entire month of February, we are going to celebrate house in the sand's fifth birthday.
(Because why celebrate on one day, if you can celebrate for an entire month, right?)
With the support from some of the finest artists and bands around, each day in February will be filled with an exclusive performance just for us.

Who is performing today?
Mark Mathews.
He is a singer/songwriter from London, UK.

That being quite a challenge on its own, the musician has gone even further and has decided to change up his writing process.
Instead of starting every song on a guitar and taking it from there, Mark has challenged himself to write on different instruments, approaching every song in a different way.

What needs to be said about this performance?
It's a new song! You know we love a premiere over here on HITS, so getting a first listen to one of our favourite acts, is a perfect birthday present - especially when it's as beautiful as this one!
You're in for a treat!

Ladies and lads, check out Mark's performance of his new song "Dying To Stay Alive".

Song Of The Day: "Grape Juice" by Mark Mathews

Hey guys!

I'm sure a lot of have heard that challenges are what keeps you going in life.
They allow you to grow, develop new skills, new techniques and they keep your mind busy.

Being stuck in a routine or the so called "comfort zone" can be the end of creativity, and obviously no creative person ever wants to be stuck in a rut.

There are many ways to keep this from happening and it's really all about finding out what works for you, and what doesn't.

Our wonderful friend Mark Mathews has come up with an incredibly cool challenge which you can find out all about today.
Check it out!

I'm excited to share his brand new song "Grape Juice" with you today.

"Grape Juice" is one of 12 songs we'll be hearing from Mark this year.
He has set himself the goal to release one new single every month throughout 2017.

That being quite a challenge on its own, the musician has gone even further and has decided to change up his writing process.
Instead of starting every song on a guitar and taking it from there, Mark has challenged himself to write on different instruments, approaching every song in a different way.

January single "Grape Juice" started as a bass riff which gives the song more groove than any of Mathews' previous tunes.
The lyrics are the result of a night out in London. Mark himself describes them as "melodic nonsense".

However, the final track is anything but nonsense.

Greeting us with and energetic drum beat, "Grape Juice" demands our full attention from the very first second.
The bass riff, which is the base of the song, couldn't be funkier if it tried.

A busy acoustic rhythm guitar keeps the spirits high. The electric guitar gets a few special appearances and adds another layer of entertainment to the track.

Mark leads us through the track with his controlling voice in the most confident and charming manner.

If you are looking for a tune to dance to - get "Grape Juice" playing and enjoy the funky grooves.

Day 14: Mark Mathews | #HITSBC16

Hey guys!

We're officially halfway through the countdown and I'm running out of intros!
All I ever seem to do is being on an endless loop of cheesy and thankful intros, and well - that's pretty much it.

I'm just very happy that I get to host a project as special as this one, so please bare with me as I send out cheesy words day by day.

Let's get into today's post!

What is special about this video?
It's Mark performing! A dear friend of HITS!
The countdown wouldn't be the same without Mark's cheerful way of congratulating us.
This performance was recorded looking of gorgeous London and Mark just nailed it with his song!
When it comes to picking a lineup, HITS just knows what to do!

So ladies and gentlemen, enjoy Mark Mathews performing "This Song Is For You" for us!

What is the Birthday Countdown though? Throughout the entire month of February, one artist/one band a day is going to wish house in the sand a happy birthday and then perform a song exclusively for us.

Mark Mathews is an indie singer/songwriter based in London, UK where you can find him busking on the streets or playing countless amounts of gigs.

Inspired by bands such as The Beatles, The Kinks and Oasis he likes to write about "love, going out, getting out of the town or a situation you're in and your mates", so the singer himself.

Song Of The Day: "Someone" by Mark Mathews

Hey guys!

Song releases are absolutely exciting, aren't they?
I am very happy to be involved in many releases as a music blogger. It's always an amazing thing to watch musicians work on new songs and then finally release them for the world to hear.

Today Mark Mathews releases his newest song "Someone".

The singer/songwriter from the Queens own garden - Kent, UK is no new face to house in the sand.
His music could be described as indie-pop with a folk twist to it and even some light sprinkles of folk-rock if you ask me.
Inspired by bands such as The Beatles, The Kinks and Oasis he likes to write about "love, going out, getting out of the town or a situation you're in and your mates", so the singer himself.

Mark has been really busy recently shooting videos, writing new tunes and gigging his way through London's streets and bar's.

"Someone" is one of Mark's slower songs, in fact it's a ballad.
The song wins you over with Mark's calm vocals. The instrumental is spot on a mixes soothing acoustic guitar elements with beautiful electric guitar riffs which just underline the emotional bits of the song.
The multilayered vocal part in the chorus is spot on and gives the song more intensity.

Really guys, just have a listen yourself!

Video Premiere: 'The Girl' by Mark Mathews

Hey guys!

Today is a premiere of a premiere.
Alright, before I'll completely confuse you, let me explain; today house in the sand is going to premiere a music video. And since we've never done that before it's a premiere of a premiere.

(Yeah, I have definitely written better intros before... Sorry, I'm just excited!)

As you probably already know after reading the title the music video we're premiering is 'The Girl' by Mark Mathews.

The videography for 'The Girl' is inspired by The Beatles video for 'A Hard Days Night'.
Some of the scenes were shot on VHS (yes, it still does exist!) to represent Mark's memories and feelings about the girl.

Now I could go on and write what I think about the video in details but I'll keep it short - I bloody love it.

Watch it yourself and feel special because you are the first people to watch it!

Video Of The Day: 'London Lives' by Mark Mathews

 Hey guys,

Music videos are strange things.
There are only two options you have when you watch them:
1) The video visualizes the song perfectly and represents the lines sung in moving pictures
2) You just don't get a single thing about what's happening on your screen

At least that's the only options I've ever experienced while watching videos.
Really.

Interview: Mark Mathews

Hey guys,

It's always a pleasure when artists I've worked with before come back for a second visit at house in the sand.
In fact, it's lovely to when it's not just a one way promo thing but an honest support collaboration.

Mark Mathews is a great example for that kind of working relationship.
We've worked together twice, the second time was for our HITS birthday, check it out here.
And now he's back for an interview!

Mark Mathews is an indie singer/songwriter based in London, UK where you can find him busking on the streets or playing countless gigs.
As the writer of super catchy indie pop songs he's a great artist to listen to. His tunes definitely burn themselves into your brain.

The upcoming release of his song 'London Lives' was the perfect occasion to sit down and chat a bit about the single, the video shoot, London and some more good things.

Birthday Countdown | Day 2: Mark Mathews

Hey guys,

it's day number 2! Already! (I'm still way too excited...)
Mark Mathews playsndie pop music. The singer/songwriter from Kent, England is influenced by The Beatles, Paul Weller, Oasis and a lot more.
Not only has he supported Frank Turner, Luke Toms and Draytones but also played hundreds of gigs and festivals.

The London Metro Newspaper listed Mark as "one of the top three unsigned acts".
So far he released three EPs:
Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride (2006)
A Flash In A Pan (2008)
Moments & Movements (2012)

And today he is going to sing a song for house in the sand! How exciting!

Get To Know: Mark Mathews

Hey guys,
I'm happy to tell you that another really talented artists sat down to give you a proper introduction of him.
Mark Mathews, an indie-pop/folk singer/songwriter from Kent (UK) took time to tell us some interesting stuff about his life as a musician.

So, here we go:

Who are you?
I'm Mark Mathews, a singer/songwriter from the Queens own Garden of England (Kent). I write and play songs on guitar and I only bloody sing them as well!!

How would you describe your music?
My music is essentially Indie-Pop but with a kind of folk edge. I'm into a far reaching spectrum of music, but the stuff that I always go back to and I guess, therefore that heavily influences me are bands like The Beatles, The Kinks, The Small Faces, Oasis and lots of Sixties soul music, all of which have big choruses and are sing-a-long tunes about topics to do with love, going out, getting out of the town or situation you're in and your mates.
