Gig Photos: James Blunt at Schleyer-Halle, Stuttgart

Hey guys!

I love how there are multiple kinds of shows.

There are those shows for which you buy tickets months in advance and can't wait for.
(Hello, Paramore!)

There are those shows you decide to attend last minute.

And then there are those shows which are totally going to surprise you.

Myself being at a James Blunt gig, was one of those surprising events - in the best way possible.

So please let me tell you more about this evening.

Before you dive into the post, I'd like to explain why the photos aren't the usual house in the sand quality.
We got to photograph the show from the stairs further away from the stage, not the actual photo pit. I didn't know that prior to the show and was not prepared for that scenario - which means I had the wrong lenses with me.

I hope can enjoy this post nonetheless.

Support Act: Jamie Lawson

Jamie Lawson is a singer/songwriter, originally from Plymouth, now based in London, UK.

To tell you his entire story, I'd need to write a couple of pages.
To avoid that, I'll try to give you the "quick JL guide", but please make sure to check out Jamie's full bio.

The musician from the United Kingdom has been writing and releasing music for years, he's been gigging loads and has built himself a loyal fanbase.

Between our first interview in November 2014 and this one, taped in November 2015,
Jamie got signed to Ed Sheeran's label (Gingerbread Man Records), supported acts such as One Direction on tour, appeared on countless radio and TV shows, released his selftitled record and has won an Ivor Novello award.

On September 29th, Jamie released his latest album, "Happy Accidents" - a colourful record which takes you on a lively journey through sounds.

It was my third time seeing Jamie Lawson live and it was just as marvelous as ever.

Jamie has such great stage presence, making you feel right at home in the audience.
There's something about his set, that makes it feel like you've known everyone in the room, including him, for years and are here for a friendly gathering.
It's only after the set that you realise you are actually in a huge venue filled with strangers.

Even though I was crying on the inside, due to not having the right photo gear with me - I couldn't help but sit back down and enjoy the beauty of Jamie's set.

He worked the crowd so well, made them clap and sing - and smile.
Yes, I loved the amount of happy smiles you could spot throughout the mixed audience.

From the calm "Cold In Ohio", to his latest single "Can't See Straight", Jamie present a great variety of moods to enjoy and was the perfect start to the evening.

Headliner: James Blunt

Now, how should be introducing you to James Blunt?
By copying his Wikipedia page?

Or by trying to sum up everything he's done within 15 years of being in this industry?

Well, we think it's best for you to check out his indepth interview-like bio, over on his website.
It's a brilliant piece that gives you a great idea of what the artist is like.

Check out his moving and relevant video for "Someone Singing Along" here:

So, here's the thing - before seeing James Blunt live, I didn't know much about him.

Of course, I knew "You're Beautiful", "1973" and his Twitter account.
But that's just common Pop culture knowledge, right?

After the show, I knew about his skills to actually play multiple instruments, his gratitude towards his fans, the deeper meanings of his songs and that he's actual as funny as his tweets.

From the moment he went on stage, right until he left after the third encore - the crowd was with him and focused on his every word.

It was super refreshing to see an artist connect with his audience with such gratitude.
James interacted with the crowd from the first song on - and the crowd happily fulfilled his requests to clap and sing along.

The mixture of upbeat tracks such, powerful statements and piano based ballads all created a perfect combination for pleasant evening.

What impressed me more than anything, was his song "Someone Singing Along" and the backdrop during the song. He showed clips of his relevant music video for the track and it seemed to have an effect on the crowd.
It was beautiful to see an artist use his platform to address issues that involve all of us, especially in times as the one we are in right now.

Apart from the serious songs, James Blunt showcased his wit, his energetic performances and his fantastic light show.

With remarks such as stating how he was "Ed Sheeran's bitch for three months" whilst being on tour with him, or how he replied with "Thank you, Papi" when a random man in the audience shouted "You're beautiful!" at him, he got a lot of laughter from the audience.

I arrived with little knowledge, but definitely left feeling well impressed by James Blunt.

And that's it.

I do hope you've enjoyed the post, even though the photos weren't the quite the quality we're all used to on here.

Let me know if you've seen James Blunt or Jamie Lawson before, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for your visit!

Video Interview: Jamie Lawson (round three)

Hey guys!

There are musicians you just don't ever get bored of;
Jamie Lawson is one of them.

When you find artists that are a delight to interview, you're most likely going to feel the need to interview them again and again.
In my case, it worked out and I filmed my third interview with Jamie last week.

I'm sure a lot of you are very familiar with his music - so this is your chance to catch up with him.
If you aren't familiar with Jamie yet - this is your chance to learn more about him.

Either way, I hope you'll enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed filming it.

Album Review: "Happy Accidents" by Jamie Lawson

Hey guys!

We get excited about new music all the time.
But can you blame us?

There are exciting tracks coming at us left, right and center and it's the best.
We have to admit, it can be a bit overwhelming to pick out which acts to present,
but let that be our worry.

You just sit back, read, relax and listen to the exciting music we get to share with you.

Today we get to chat about one of our favourite artists and his new release.

Artist: Jamie Lawson
Title: Happy Accidents
Genre: Acoustic
Label: Warner Music, Gingerbread Man Records
Release Date: 29th September 2017

And now he's back with his new album, "Happy Accidents".

Tracklist:
1) A Little Mercy
2) Can't See Straight
3) Tell Me Again
4) Fall Into Me
5) Don't Say You Don't If You Do
6) Miracle Of Love
7) Falling In Love
8) Time On My Hands
9) Sing To The River
10) He's Reading Helena
11) Letter Never Sent
12) The Last Spark
13) Love Finds A Way

Opener "A Little Mercy" creates an intimate atmosphere with simple verses. Mainly focused on subtle backing vocals, a calm guitar and warm lead vocals. The piano joins and immediately highlights Jamie's vocals in a sparkling light. Soft percussions add more depth, but keep the pace. With hopeful lyrics and choir backing vocals in the last part of the song, "A Little Mercy" gracefully transitions into a powerful song opening track.

The frist single we got to hear ahead of the release, was "Can't See Straight" - which is straight-up "on repeat for hours" material.
It's loving, it's happy and it is so bright in sound colours.
You'll quickly start singing along to the song. Go on and sing it for your significant other, your pet or your food. We'll do the same.

"Fall Into Me" definitely stands out. It's a lot darker than the previous tracks, music wise. We hear more electric guitars, we have a steady and strong beat vibrating throughout the track and a bass that underlines the intensity of the song. It showcases the honesty and emotions that Jamie Lawson puts into his music with such elegance.

Jamie wraps up the album with "Love Finds A Way", a stunning ballad. Piano, bass and percussions go hand in hand, creating such harmony and peacefulness. It's that kind of song that is going to calm you down on a stressful day. It'll act like a cozy blanket, keeping the bad mood from coming in.

To sum it up: After his fantastic debut, we had no doubt that Jamie Lawson would convince us of his talents yet again with "Happy Accidents".
It's a beautiful and lively journey through emotions, highlighting not just his musical skills, but also his ability to tell stories with grace.

Performance Of The Day: "Miracle Of Love" by Jamie Lawson

Hey guys!

It's probably no secret - I love observing music.
Might sound a little odd, but I think it's so fascinating to watch artists evolve and constantly put out fabulous work.

I get very excited when I see (hear) artists who have their very own signature sound,
but still aren't afraid to work in new and modern elements.

Social Media has made it so easy to follow musicians on the journey, so let's not waste our time and check out some sweet tunes!

And now he's back with new music!
His next album, "Happy Accidents", will be out on September 29th 2017.

He's already shared the first single, "Can't See Straight", with us.

And just last week he released a live performance of "Miracle Of Love".

As soon as the song starts, you just know it's Jamie Lawson.
It's the thoughtful songwriting, the emotional delivery - and of course - the voice.

"Miracle Of Love" is definitely a ballad, but one that's deeper than many others. It's not just the lyrics and the slower pace, that make this song an exceptionally beautiful one - it's the melody, the harmony of the different elements, they practically walk hand in hand.

You can tell that Jamie has spent a lot of time crafting his songs and that he's made sure to think of every detail you could wish for.

He kept his charming signature sound, but has managed to include new elements in such grace and elegance.

Album Review: "Jamie Lawson" by Jamie Lawson

Hey guys!

What do you expect from a selftitled album?

Well, I expect an honest album; one that represents the artists' signature style.
A musical polaroid.

I think selftitled products should be 100% of the person behind it, otherwise they don't seem very convincing.
Especially with music, something so personal and emotional, it's easy to judge whether an album is honest or not.

Today I'd like to review Jamie Lawson's selftitled record.

Artist: Jamie Lawson
Title: Jamie Lawson
Genre: Acoustic, Folk-Pop
Label: Gingerbread Man Records, Warner Music
Release: 29th February 2016 (German release date)
HITS rating: 8.5/10

Jamie Lawson is a singer/songwriter originally from Plymouth, UK now based in London, UK.
To describe his story, I'd need to write a couple of pages. To avoid that, I'll try to give you the "quick JL guide", but please make sure to check out Jamie's full bio.

The musician from the United Kingdom has been writing and releasing music for years, he's been gigging loads and has built himself a loyal fanbase.

Between our first interview in November 2014 and this one, taped in November 2015,
Jamie got signed to Ed Sheeran's label (Gingerbread Man Records), supported acts such as One Direction on tour, appeared on countless radio and TV shows and released his selftitled record which he's now taking on the road.

Tracklist:
1) Wasn't Expecting That
2) Someone For Everyone
3) Cold In Ohio
4) The Only Conclusion
5) Still Yours
6) All Is Beauty
7) Don't Let Me Let You Go
8) Ahead Of Myself
9) In Our Own Worlds
10) Sometimes It's Hard
11) Let Love Hold You Now

First hit single of the album, "Wasn't Expecting That", is the song which welcomes you to the album.
It's an acoustic guitar based song, the instrumentation is very simple, very clear. The guitar is accompanied by a delicate piano and gentle percussions.
The very vivid, storytelling lyrics soak you in and allow you to see the love story in bright pictures.

The subtle use of instruments let Jamie's vocals stand out. His voice transports the honesty of the song in such powerful manner.

Another track which stands out is "Cold In Ohio"; it's similarly calm and simple when it comes to arrangements, yet it's a song that grabs your attention. The song itself doesn't feature one bit of "cold", the atmosphere of the track is warm, friendly and wraps you in like a cozy blanket.
(P.s.: yes, that's Ed Sheeran singing backing vocals.)

"Still Yours" shows Jamie's darker, more mysterious side. The steady and confident drum beat leads through the track, the acoustic guitar in the chorus underlines the positive message in the rather serious song.

To sum it up: Jamie Lawson is honest, passionate and one hell of a storyteller. And so is this album; the simple instrumentations are anything but boring- they are cleverly arranged.
Jamie's vocals are on point; they're expressive, strong, warm and a joy to listen to.
Jamie Lawson delivered a mighty fine album and I wasn't expecting anything else. ;)

You should listen to these tracks: Wasn't Expecting That, Cold In Ohio, Ahead Of Myself

Video Interview: Jamie Lawson (round two)

Hey guys!

Most of the times I sit here writing my intros with an exact idea of what I want to say.
But sometimes I feel like there is so much to say, that I'm not quite sure what to mention.

Today is that kind of day.

Before I start the actual post, I want to talk about those artists who deserve every bit of success.
I want to talk about how nice it is to see this parts of the music industry being an actual community, a friendly community.
I want to talk how much I love this job.

You see, all of those topics are slightly different and just don't make one intro.

And the artist who is to blame for this "word vomit" is Jamie Lawson.
He's no new name to the house in the sand community, in fact, we can call him a friend of the blog.

Jamie Lawson is a singer/songwriter originally from Plymouth, UK now based in London, UK.
To describe his story, I'd need to write a couple of pages. To avoid that, I'll try to give you the "quick JL guide", but please make sure to check out Jamie's full bio.

The man who's "taking off and landing" all the time sat down with me to chat about touring with One Direction, performing on the Ellen show, playing in front of massive audiences and more.

Enjoy!

I just want to say a massive thank you to Jamie for being incredibly sweet and arranging our filming session himself. It was so nice to catch up on what has happened. To see an artist, I've discovered "before the madness", do so well is exactly what I do this for!

Please check out Jamie's album if you haven't already, it'll be released in Germany later this month.

Day 6: Jamie Lawson | #HITSBC15

Hey guys!

It's already day 6 of our Birthday Countdown and I'm so happy about how you seem to enjoy it. Your support makes this countdown even more special, so thank you!

What is the Birthday Countdown though? Throughout the entire month of February, one artist/one band a day is going to wish house in the sand a happy birthday and then perform a song exclusively for us.

Today Jamie Lawson is the main act of our party.

Jamie Lawson is a singer/songwriter from England.
His sound blends acoustic and pop and has its focus on the honest and vividly storytelling lyrics. He started playing the guitar at the young age of 8 years and started writing his own songs in his teenage years. Over the years Jamie has build himself a loyal fanbase.

With the help of YouTube his song "Wasn't Expecting That" climbed to the number one spot in the iTunes Charts Ireland.

In the last couple of years he supported acts like Damien Rice, Ben Howard and most recently Ed Sheeran.

Just before Jamie went on stage to open the show for Ed Sheeran in Stuttgart, we filmed this little video of him performing his song "Cold In Ohio".
I apologise for my rather disappointing camera work, nonetheless I'm absolutely sure you'll love Jamie's performance.

Many thanks to Jamie who was absolutely lovely to work and hang out with. Looking forward to seeing you play a headline show hopefully soon!

Please go ahead and share this performance with your friends by using the hashtag #HITSBC15.

Video Interview: Jamie Lawson

Hey guys!

Whenever I go to a gig I check out who's supporting the artist/the band.
Within four years of regurlarly going to concerts I've only seen three support acts I did not enjoy.

In fact most of the other supports became some of my favourites. (Hi The Arkanes, Jim Kroft, Martin and James, Dan Dietrich!)

Ed Sheeran, whom I photographed on Saturday, took two support acts with him. One of them was Jamie Lawson whose sound I instantly liked. So of course I had to learn more about him - and what's better than an interview for that?

Jamie Lawson is a singer/songwriter from England. He got his first guitar at the age of 8 years, started songwriting in his teenage years and slowly but surely made himself a name. With the help of YouTube his song "Wasn't Expecting That" climbed to the number one spot in the iTunes Charts Ireland.
In the last couple of years he supported acts like Damien Rice, Ben Howard and Van Morrison.

Before he went on stage to support Ed Sheeran we sat down in his dressing room at Porsche Arena in Stuttgart to chat about being on tour with Ed, sleepless nights on the tour bus, online media and a lot more.

Gig Impressions: Ed Sheeran in Stuttgart

 Hey guys!

The instagram/twitter and facebook people are already informed - yesterday I got to photograph Ed Sheeran in concert.
As part of the "X Tour" he played at Porsche Arena in Stuttgart.

The singer/songwriter has made himself a name by now and is known as "the guy with the guitar and the loopstation". With his hit single 'The A-Team' the musician slowly but surely made his way to the top whilst casually supporting Taylor Swift on her Red Tour.

His first album "+" (Plus) sold over 4 million times world wide, album two "X" (Multiply) has gone gold and platinum in multiple countries.
With the X Tour he now brought the songs to life, live on stage.

Here are some of my thoughts (AND PHOTOGRAPHS) from the gig.

Jamie Lawson

Being the first of two support acts the pressure to get the crowd in the mood was on Jamie.
Jamie Lawson is a singer/songwriter from the UK. With his acoustic signature sound he managed to build a loyal fanbase.

He got to play five songs - all were acoustic tracks focused on warm guitar work and calming but really expressive vocals.
His lyrics convince as they are honest, deep and tell stories different stories.
Jamie's stage performance is enchanting and absolutely enjoyable, he definitely presented his songs in a fantastic and suitable way.

If you want to learn more about Jamie, find his links below. Also, stay tuned as we filmed an interview together which will be online pretty soon.

Jamie Lawson online: Website | Twitter | Facebook | YouTube

Saint Raymond

Round two of the evening! Callum Burrows, the man behind stage name Saint Raymond is a young singer/songwriter from Nottingham, UK.
Together with his band he presented his indie pop tunes to the massive crowd.

The full band line up caused a more energetic and up-beat performance. The fences between singer/songwriter and indie rock band kind of melted and therefore created a lighter atmosphere.

Saint Raymond online: Website | Twitter | Facebook | YouTube

Ed Sheeran

The main man of the evening. He swims in the mainstream sea so individually and represents so many not-so-mainstreamy elements.

When he's performing you usually find two mics, multiple guitars and a loop station on stage. Instead of playing with a band, he keeps it "simple" by just being a one mand show.
Though what he does on stage is anything but simple - for songs like "Don't" he records multi-layered backing vocals live.
To give the songs more grip and more volume you'll find Ed using the guitar to drum on it.
As a lot of his songs consist of guitar riffs as well as rhythm elements he records either and plays the other live.

His set in Stuttgart was a nice mix of old and newer songs, ballads and up tempo tracks.
He even threw in some covers.

What absolutely amazed me is how well he knows how to entertain and control a crowd. You could think there are some awkward silences when just one guy is trying to entertain a crowd of thousands of people.
Well, Ed just does it so casually by telling funny stories and interacting with his fans.

Ed Sheeran online: Website | Twitter | Facebook | YouTube

Special thanks to Jamie, once again. It was a pleasure meeting you, thanks for the whole evening. Really happy I got to film with you!

Also, I really do have to mention what a nice and relaxed lad Ed Sheeran is. When I entered backstage he was in the middle of a conversation but stopped just to say hi and make sure everybody is doing fine. Thumbs up for that!

Thank you for reading!
