Song Of The Day: "Wherever You Are" by Kodaline

10th January 2020 //

Hey everyone!

Kodaline are starting the year off right.
Ten days into 2020 Kodaline fans are blessed with a new track after the band has been hinting at releasing new music through their last few posts on social media.

The four musicians from Ireland had a busy couple of years.
Whenever they aren't writing and recording music, they are out there touring the world.
(Or filming interviews with us... #1, #2, #3.)

2019 has seen them touring a lot and some more, playing songs off of their latest album, "Politics of Living". Steve, Mark, Jay & Vinny seemingly have found a brilliant rhythm of releasing EPs and albums in between their extensive tours.

- Song Of The Day -
"Wherever You Are" by Kodaline

Steve says about the song: "'Wherever You Are' is a song about loved ones staying in your heart and mind even when they're not with you. I wrote it specifically for my girlfriend as due to being away on tour all the time we never really got to see each other."

The song is a hopeful one, it's comforting right from the first note on.
With heartfelt lyrics and an uplifting melody, Kodaline have once again managed to stay true to the elements their fans love while also evolving and going the direction that feels most natural to them.

We get harmonies, we get acoustic guitar, we get a rhythm section that drives the song and we get a damn beautiful message. The way the song is structured allows you to go on a journey with the band; going from calm and soft to upbeat and powerful, you experience every detail fully.

Date: 11th May 2019
Venue: Albert Hall, Manchester (UK)

Headliner: Dermot Kennedy

Dermot Kennedy is a singer/songwriter from Dublin, Ireland.

His style is influenced by his love for hip-hop and poetry, his music mixes acoustic and electronic arrangements with R'n'B and hip-hop elements. With a voice so distinctive and powerful, it's no surprise that his music has attracted fans from all over the world.

Dermot's music has been compared to artists such as Bon Iver, James Blake and James Vincent McMorrow, yet he clearly has found his own signature style.

He met Glen Hansard by chance on the streets of Dublin and invited him to the studio years later while working on new recordings. While Hansard wasn't able to make it to the studio, he offered Dermot ten minutes on stage at his sold-out Christmas show, giving him the chance to perform in front of a big audience.

Soon enough, Dermot Kennedy got to celebrate his huge success with the acoustic driven "After Rain", a song that quickly wrack up hundreds of thousands of streams.
Despite all the praise he got for the acoustic sound, he decided to incorporate hip-hop elements in the making of his debut EP, "Doves & Ravens", which was released in 2017.

You most likely have heard his single "Power Over Me", a track written with honesty and performed with passion.

Besides performing at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, SXSW and Austin City Limits, Dermot has been gigging all over the place.
To see if he's playing in a city near you soon, visit his website and scroll down for the tour dates.

Release Of The Day: "Shed A Tear" by Kodaline

Hey guys!

And we're onto post number 4 - and judging by the state of my brain, we're gonna leave it here.

Of course there are still plenty more releases out on this fine New Music Friday, but we can't just cover them all in one day.
(Although the thought is tempting!)

It's been such a blast sharing all this new music with you in one day and we truly hope you've enjoyed it as much as we did.

We're finishing off with our release of the day - a track by Kodaline.

Ever since we've been introduced to the band about three years ago, we've been big fans of their sound and already had the pleasure of interviewing them twice.

And until this day, they are two of our favourite interviews we've filmed so far -
check them out here: Kodaline interview & "who is?" game | Kodaline interview & "accent challenge"

Now let's do this one more time!

- Release Of The Day -
"Shed A Tear" by Kodaline

Kodaline are a four piece band from Dublin, Ireland.
Genre-wise they've walked on the fine line between alternative and folk but they seem to navigate towards a modern Alt-Pop sound.

Singer Steve and guitarist Mark have known each other from school. Meeting drummer Vinny and former bassist Conor a few years later led them to start out as a band. As "21 Demands" the quartet was part of the Irish talent show "You're A Star" and came in second.
After a busy time and a chart hit, things slowed down.

With a new bassist and a new band name - Kodaline was born. Their first selftitled EP brought out their song "All I Want" which found a lot of positive feedback, especially online. Soon that song was played on the TV series Grey's Anatomie and The Vampire Diaries.
In 2013 the press re-discovered the band and predicted big times for the Irish lads.

Kodaline are:
Steve Garrigan
Mark Prendergast
Jason Boland
Vinny May

2015 was a whirlwind for the band; they released their fantastic second record "Coming Up For Air", played tons of festivals, performed with Ed Sheeran and continued touring.

They then slowed down the touring side of things and started writing and recording new material.
Soon they released single "Brother" (and made everyone cry with it) and later on in 2017 they dropped their latest EP "I Wouldn't Be".

Earlier this year they shared "Follow Your Fire", the first single off of their upcoming record "Politics Of Life".

And today they've dropped "Shed A Tear" - so let's hear it!

The thing with Kodaline is, you never know exactly where they are going to take it, but you know that they'll nail it.
It's their thing. They just nail it.

And "Shed A Tear" is no exception.
It falls in the atmospheric and emotional category and let me just say this - the production of it is on another level.

The band has always convinced audiences with their lyrics (chances are high that you've cried to "All I Want" before) and also with their harmonies (just look up any of their acoustic performances) - and "Shed A Tear" combines both of those strong elements.

Mesmerizing lead vocals guide us through the track, while it feels like the percussions carry us through. With the support from guitar and bass, there's no way this track could go wrong.

To top it off, they've casually added choir vocals and now we're feeling all the feels.

Song Of The Day: "Follow Your Fire" by Kodaline

Hey guys!

There are bands who just always surprise you.
Kodaline definitely fit that category and they do it so well.

For the past three years we've been following the band's developements and they did not disappoint once.

In our opinion, it's extremely cool to see how bands and their sound can be defined by time but can also define time.
This band is definitely helping defining the current music momentum for everyone and we already can't wait to see what they surprise us with next.

For now, we've got their latest track on repeat and we're kinda sure you'll join our repeat party as soon as you hear the track.

We're not sure how they did it, but somehow this track makes contrasts work like no other.
It's modern but also so nostalgic.

They've kept the verses simple and reduced them to the minimum which gives the track a lot of depth and gradually allows you to get to know their re-newed sound.
However in the chorus they showcase their talent for catchy melodies and relatable lyrics.

What's noticeable about the track is how every element is equally important for the track.
They work together to create the song and don't have a stand-out element which is taking up all the attention, but still the song is lively and carried by the layers we find in the chorus.

Kodaline made it obvious that they work in unison and we applaud them for that.
It all sounds so natural and you can vividly imagine the track just pouring out of the band, because it sounds like an exact representation of their musical journey.

"Follow Your Fire" confirms that Kodaline are going with the times and are not afraid to change things up.

Spotlight On: Hudson Taylor

Hey guys,

Oh me oh my. Today I'm once again really excited because I already know a lot of you are going to enjoy the music I want to introduce today.

Hudson Taylor is a duo consisting of the brothers Alfie and Harry from Dublin, Ireland.
Two lads with a lot of passion and even more talent to make music.
They started out busking on the streets of Dublin and continued recording videos on their YouTube channel throughout the years which had over 4.5 million views by now.

Besides cover versions of famous tracks they also perform their originals and have released quite a few tunes.
